JL Audio Sub

My dad's friend owns an Audio shop and he said he can hook it up with a 18 inch sub from JL Audio for about 450.00. Good price? To big? Would it fit?

darklegacy540 is on a distinguished road
I work for a shop that carries JL Audio.. anyways,
here are the specs for the JL Audio 18W3 straight off the JL website:
Nominal Diameter: 18 inches (460 mm)
Continuous Power Handling: 400 Watts
Voice Coil: 2.5" diameter, 4-layer, Kapton former
Available Configurations: Dual 2 ohm or Dual 4 ohm
Xmax (one-way, linear): 0.50" (12.7 mm)
Sealed Enclosure Range: 2.00-4.00 cu.ft. (57.0-113.0 liters)
Ported Enclosure Range: 3.25-5.00 cu.ft. (92.0-142.0 liters)
VRC™ Technology: YES
Cross-Drilled Pole Piece: YES
Elevated Frame Technology: NO

Now more focusing on the sealed enclosure range and the ported enclosure range. If you were going sealed, you could easily fiberglass an enclosure and construct it so you it takes up minimal trunk space. Assuming you were going to be putting it in your trunk at least. If you were going ported, again it would be simple enough to fiberglass an enclosure. However, if you're building your sub box out of MDF or HDF, depending on what Qts spec you choose when constructing the enclosure, it might not be practical.

I love JL Audio.. they're definitely one of my favorites. However, considering your RMS wattage on the sub is only 400 watts (well that factor isn't so much how much power the sub can handle, but more or less a thermal specification on how much heat is produced at 400 watts but a sub's RMS can change depending on the enclosure), it's not practical at all to have a sub take up that much room in your trunk. If you're still going to be looking at JL, I would strongly suggest the W6s or if you have the money, maybe a W7.. Even the price of $450 is a little high. For that much, you can buy a W6 and sound a lot better. Just my 2 cents
