Hu?

well i was hooking up my gf head unit in her 2000 ford ranger, and it didnt work. first off i ended up with 2 orange wires left over that hook to god knows what. also there are 2 black ground wire, but only one on the factory harness, do i connect them both, or do i put one together and ground the other to the truck? help asap please, it makes noise when i connect it but nothing when i turn the truck on. i also tried to hook the old one back up when it didnt work and that one doesnt work now either.....

You can leave the two orange ones unhooked. One is for illumination and the other is for dimmer. It will work fine without either one of those hooked up. I've never seen two black wires on a deck, but okay. I would be a little cautious in connecting those together. Are you using a harness adapter or hardwiring it? If I remember correctly the ground in a Ford vehicle is not black, so if you are hardwiring it, you may have blown a fuse. Search for the vehicle wiring database, it's here on this site.

You may have the amplified Ford Premium system. There should be two plugs. One will be flat, maybe 7 or 8 pins. That will have the power, illum, dimmer, ant on it. Ideally, there will be another flat plug that goes directly to the speakers. If there is a larger rectangular black plug that is the preamp input. At this point you may need to bypass the factory amp OR deal with volume that gets loud quickly. There should be an amp ground wire (possibly one of the ones you have?) that needs to be spliced with the new HU ground. Voila! Sound. Sounds like you blew a fuse, also. If you want to check if the amp is there, connect the speaker leads and touch the + and - leads with a +9 V battery, you should hear a pop, if not, you got an amp.
