In my 97 honda civic, the A/C is set to automatically turn on when the windshield defrost is selected. It works this way from the factory and states so in the manual. What i can't figure out is why? I live in canada and use the defrost quite frequently, however i also like to switch between other levels. The problem is i always forget the a/c comes on with defrost and so waste more gas than I need to. Would there be anyway to make the a/c totally separated from the defrost function?

I think the A/C comes on in defrost to remove humidity. It makes the windows clear faster.

tbaleno is right.. it keeps yer windows from foggin up when they are defrosting
