Need some help with a BS call

I have a guy I am in college with who is bragging about an install he and a friend did. I think he is full of crap. Here is what he told me. He works for circuit city and a guy came in with a 350z wanting custom work done. So they offered to do it and he left the car with them for 1 month. They tore the insides down completely, dynomatted the entire car, then installed (4) yes (4) 15's in the car. They also installed a flat screen in the trunk with the crossovers, amps, and caps. Then he said they hit 155-165 on the decibel meter.

My question for you is....

Do you guys think it is possible to fit 4 15's subs in a small car such as a 350z? I personally don't think you would have enough volume inside the car to allow the speakers their proper air space......?

What do you think.....

If they got em in there I'm sure its possible. The small are works against making big boxes ..... but is an advantage since there is less car space to pressurise ....

lol at circuit city doing custom work. The dynamat I believe, but not the rest unless they just threw that stuff in without making it pretty. They don't do any custom work there sorry. And the owner is stupid for going there instead of a real custom shop.

they did my install and built me a amp rack, and installed a trunk popper, the pilar LEDs arent really custom.. but they do some decent work..

I dunno if good vibes does better/cheaper work, or premier, I hear bad things about every place around here, and overall I dont have a problem w/ CC other than it being expensive..

You can fit them...theres a Z around here with four 12's...

I dont believe the SPL score though. Theres a CRX here thats ranked one of the top in the state with a 156 I believe and he has six 15's ported with 6,000 watts, built for SPL.

Why wouldn't circuit city do custom work? It depends on the market in the area as to what they do. Some installers work at Circuit City because of the benefits that they offer that the majority of audio shops do not. There are some good installers at some circuit city(or other chains) stores, it really just depends on whats around the area. The installers here all open their own shops, or work in big shops because there's a huge market for it, and they can get by doing this.

155-165 is a HUGE HUGE HUGE interval for him to be estimating the loudness though

155 will be loud
165 will get you to world finals

Where is the pics?

Circuit City as a general rule does NOT do custom work. They would never want to tie up the shop profits in one job. That is just business. Most shops do not even have the room to take up one whole bay for a month.

Plus way too much hype going on here. If he had pics, I would listen, but without them, I smell a cow pie as big as a house.

It is my understanding that he didn't do the car through circuit city but on the side. I can see 4 12's fitting but I just can't see 4 15's. That is way too much for that small a space. He told me either 156 or 165 on the decibel meter. Either way I think 156 is a load of crap. He said the whole job cost the guy about 8k. I still don't believe it though....

If any Circuit City employee does an installation on the side, he can and will be immediately terminated. So where did he keep this car for a month, in his garage?

Now it totally smells like bs.

Right, and one of the installers i was working with bought 15 remote starts all for himself (when the rattlers went to $40 a piece 4 monthes ago)....

Circuit City has done custom work before, we have pics on our register of custom work that has come out of our shop, and I know of plenty of other shops that have too. We have had a car in our shop for a month before for custom work (and no, it wasnt because we broke it or anything stupid like that).

Not every installer that works for CC is clueless, most that I know are damn good installers except most of the newbs and a few that just dont care.

Installing car audio equipment is not rocket science. The hardest part is matching the equipment (before purchase) to the car's accoustic capabilities and doing a proper install (including sound proofing / deadening) and squaring up the electrical system. The other side is the creative pieces that come out. That is the part I like about it........

CUSTOM!!!!!!

1. I believe he could have theoretically put 6+ 15s in there.
2. He did not say that they fit 4 15's with proper air space, correct?
3. Good point pop. I think typically of CC as not a real custom shop, but it's certainly reasonably to expect a good installer might work there for the discounts and steady stream of work.
4. Lakeland, the best car audio installs are not real far off from rocket science. Guys like Lud, Rabbit, Mo, etc spend days on end with a calculator and paper before even beginning the install.
5. If CC did a month long install, gutted a new Z and hit over 150db, you better beleive they've got picture. Just ask him for the pictures. If he say's there are none, I DEFINITELY wouldn't believe him about the install.

Err, you said nothing to refute my statement. Circuit City has a policy. Whether or not someone gets caught is one thing, but risking your job is another.

A side job is risky because you are accepting liability for the entire car. You probably have no insurance. It is not a question of skill.

But nothing has been shown that he has the skill to do the install, that he did the install, or anything past his CLAIM of doing an install.

And I never said that Circuit City has bad installers. I worked for CC and I can tell you that awesome installers do work there.

I just doubt that someone says something outlandish and it should automatically be believed as truth.

Isobaric mount?
I can believe 4 15"s can fit if it was installed in that way.

If the rear was walled off I'm pretty sure 4 15"s can fit also.

But yeah definitely ask for pictures.

There's a Circiut City here in Jax that does custom fiberglass enclosures. I know because they were doing one for a C5 Corvette. Of course the C5 owner is a dumbass for 2 reasons:

1. Getting custom work done by Circuit City to a Corvette.
2. Buying Sony Xplods.

Are you that sure of that? Some high profile installer have worked at circuit city in the past. If I remember correctly, the Fishman once worked there when he first got into the biz. Now, he's one of the largest names in car audio. There are lots of installers that have gotten their start there. And yes, some circuit city locations do not do or allow custom work. But there are some that do custom work as a primary basis. If you have the money, they'll do it. But to make a blanket statement and say that none of them do it is ignorant. As a matter of fact, I do believe one of Circuit City's install teams competed in the 48 hour installer's challenge at one of the higher profile shows.

I highly doubt any cc installer is worried about losing there job over side work. In 18 years of installing I have not met an installer who doesn't do side work. I used to make more money on side work than I did art my normal job.

just fyi on the custom thing.. when I had my install done they offered to make me a custom box too, I know the stuff they did for me (amp rack mainly) isnt really "custom work" but they do it to an extent locally... and the guy who offered to have the box made wasnt suggesting he himself make it, he said Jason makes the boxes.. and Jason is the car audio manager..

I work for more of a custom shop. Yes, it is nice because I can spend more time on an install, we sell better products, and the work is pretty steady.. but I can guarantee from experience that places like CC, Best Buy, etc are selling a ton of more head units and small things like that because it is a recognized business. I used to be employed at Best Buy doing installs there and there was only me and another guy who were MECP Certified. Although I love the place I work at, I know being employed by a corp isn't bad either.. job security, benefits, being able to take off when I want without pissing the owner off, etc.. it sucks working 6 days a week although the pay is a lot better.
Anyways, yes you can fit 4 15"s in a 350Z.. I've crammed 8 12"s in a Ford Probe GT before.

Ah, gotta love the thoroughness of J187.

CC in my area has done some custom work. They even have a picture book, so I'm sure this dude would have something to prove it.
