ipod mounting locations
I'm thinking about getting an ipod for my 04 EX coupe. I think I have it figured out what it takes to wire it up to the stock HU, but I would like to see what other people have done as far as where they mount/keep their ipod for easy access. I'm not interested in controlling it with the HU, just want it mounted where its accesssible. Also, I don't want a big ugly cord coming out of the cig lighter port to keep it charged. Anybody come up with their own way to charge it and send the signal through the dock connector while keeping it really clean looking? Post your pics please.
if your looking for a place to keep it, belkin sells these i pod cupholders at best buy for about $40, will sit in your cup holder nicly, you may not want to control the ipod from the HU but there is this cable in a forementioned thread that will charge your ipod, connect it to your head unit / speakers and control your ipod probably your best bet

I've seen the cup-holder things. Not real impressed. I also don't want to be plugging into the mini-jack each time. I would like to use the dock connector for both power and the audio out. It shouldn't be a problem to do this, but I want to know if people have any clean, creative installs they have done. Maybe everyone just hooks up a cord and sets it down wherever. Just curious.

mp3yourcar.com
think of the Head unit control as a bonus, perhaps instead of mounting just throw the Ipod in the glove compartment
probably your best method. In terms of mounting be creative, you can put it anywhere, the cup holder thing isnt the greatest but it has a neat pod you get with it and can mount that pod somewhere. Just think of a place go to your local audio shop, and ask them to hide the wire for you, our civics litterally snap apart in peices of plastic and you can run wires anywhere.
ipodlounge.com might be a better place for you to ask.
The skys the limit, you could have your ipod molded into your dash if you got the money for fiberglass / bondo.
or some velcro and have it on your steering wheel. Dont expect too many people to get creative for you!
and YES our stock head units have the cd changer port

wonder if theirs a way to mount it to the pillar and have it flip/fold down so that its not always in the way.. like a lil hinge and some velrco or a lil button snap release..
though i bet with a lil fiberglass/bondo play you could make a lil housing for it so that it sits nice and snug between the vent and pillar..
or you could even replace the vent with the ipod... though you live in MN... which means you use yer heat durring the winter so maybe that wouldnt be the best idea.... and that might not work due to relfection and stuff..
hmmmmmmmm......?

my original thoughts would work better with a 01-02 civic since u have that pocket next to the passenger seat that is quite large. First i was thinking about making a swival base that would work like a hinge...so i can easyly move the ipod in and out of the car but when it is folded down then it would fit flush with the rest of the car.
Honestly it wouldn't be too much work if i had that model and year, b/c all u would have to do is make a surrounding out of fiberglass for the wire and the pod and then attach a hinge with a piece of mdf as a casing and then work it in the bottom of the pocket.
i have a 2003 so i am curretrnyl thinking about where i can place it that it will look good and leave me access to change things while driving without putting a large driving distraction on myself

Simple... but not a cheap alternative. Here's what I'm doing now. A 2004 Alpine head unit (like the 9835), and the Alpine KCA-420i iPod control interface. Hook it up, plug in the iPod, and hide it in the glovebox. You have total control of the iPod with the controls on the head unit. And the head unit's display shows u song name and artist.

My 04 coupe doesn't have the "little bin thingy", some good ideas have been mentioned considering there aren't a large number of suitable locations. I would really love the alpine setup but that requires an alpine deck, and the ipod controller box, plus the ipod I don't have yet. That's quite a bit more than I want to spend, but maybe I should just save up for it. Does anyone have experience with it? Are the alpine ipod controls easy to use?
Not sure about the controls being easy to use. But it should be as easy as navigating thru a cd full of mp3s. I have the iPod, but not the Alpine unit yet. I'm getting the 9835 and should have it in by the end of the week.
