What if JL Audio ....
What if JL Audio ....
What if JL Audio started making HUs ????
I mean they make really sweet subs, and now components and stuff too. They have become quite popular and most seem to consider them very good quality (self included).
So if they started making HUs would they be bad *** like the rest of their products .... or would they start being a mass market company and it would be their own downfall as they diversify into a multitude of different products .....

I had read that they had made one in the past...but it was so expensive that no one bought it
I sure wish my car was newer

I think it's too late for JL to get into the market of making headunits. It's kind of how certain actors become known for just one role and can't get work as anyone else. When I think JL, I think of speakers and amps - not HUs.
Then again, I could be totally wrong.

BTW, I think Alpine is the only company that i know of in Car Audio that has almost every aspect covered from top to bottom...HU, Subs, speakers, amps etc...and their high-end line products in every area are up their with some of the best, or at least the most respected companies.

I don't believe Alpine makes cabling or wiring components. And yes, their high end stuff can compete head to head and win when up against the best of the best in car audio. While we are on the topic of Alpine, they DO have a feature to control their amps from the HU's. I believe it is only for a few models of their Class D amps, but yes I know for a fact that they have it. It's an awesome feature and if JL could make a HU and integrate such a feature into it, I'm all for it (even though I'm not a JL user

can't forget about eclipse
their HU's are top of the line, IMO. I have owned several and will never own anything else.
Although their speakers, subs and amps aren't that bad, they aren't the best

RF, as well...but Alpine is the only company that has a top of the line product in all of the main catagories...Alpine's weakest point would be their amps, if you can even call it a weakness...the only reason I would rate Alpine amps as their weakest catagory is because they have some of the best speakers and HUs

Alpine's F#1 status MRV-F900 is definitely a top of the line amp. The AccuClass-D are very good as well. Power wise they can't test to the big boys but they don't try so that is not a fair comparison. SQ wise I haven't heard them but I would assume the AccuClass-D line are designed to hold down the low end in an F#1 install or be integral in a good SQ or multimedia setup so I would expect them to sound pretty good.

but as was stated, only eclipse and alpine can hold their own in every single category.
RF used to be a contender, but they declined some in few aspects
pioneer can still hold it down in the headunit and amp department (their japanese amps)
clarion only in the headunit department anymore (9255)
kenwood cant really hold it down anywhere, nor can jvc
i believe legacy also makes everything as well, but we wont even mention them
I don't think JL would be a huge contender for HUs. JL has a reputation for SQ. People buy HUs, for the most part, for the features. While speakers and amps have a huge range of SQ (it's really easy to tell a bad amp or speaker), HUs are a bit different. People buy HUs to match the interior colors or because the EQ has a lot of bands. Very few people buy HUs for their SQ (mainly, I think, because so many HU manufacturers -- Pioneer, Alpine, Eclipse -- all offer good SQ).
If JL could come out with a HU that had a really nice internal amp, though, maybe that would be different... I could see there being a market for this sort of thing. Lots of people don't want to deal with separate amps, and if there were a HU that put out a clean 20 - 25 watts RMS, well, I think everyone here would be recommending that HU to people who weren't sure they wanted an amp!

I wish more companies made less complicated HUs...I swear if I had a pioneer in my car, I would have had a heart attack by now playing with all the features the come with and trying to determine if it sounds better...less is more sometimes for me.
Now that I think about it...I hate tons of features that I don't want...I wish I could buy amps with no x-overs or bass boost, so that I could just use a seperate crossover for that...all the extra features can be a waste in my eyes.

Yeah with all the fancy eq's and bass boosts and q factors and whathaveyou's in my deck I just set them all to zero and I'm like awww yeah
Ludlam definitely hit the nail on the head with his last post. What he did neglect to realize though is that out of all those well rounded companies, Alpine is STILL the only one that covers every market, low end (type-e), medium end (type-s), high end (type-r), high end (type-x) and SUPER high end (F#1). I don't think that any of the companies have that big of a target audience.
Eclipse covers the high end department as good as the best of them, but they don't show any (or very much) love for the guys without hefty paycheques.
Also, anybody know why Alpine makes NO cabling? Man I bet if they did I bet they would make millions on top of millions on dollars. It wouldn't even have to be good. People would eat it up if they made it look fancy just because it had the Alpine name on it. Then they could start a new market for high end car audio cabling if they ever decided to introduce a Type-X or better yet F#1 line of cable.
