How high is 125Hz?
So the Pioneers I'm looking at have the sub crossover at 50, 80, or 125Hz. I'm worried that this isn't high enough. I saw an Alpine that would allow the crossover to go all the way up to 200Hz. Right now I'm using the stock deck so there is no crossover. I just don't want to spend a lot of money on a deck and then end up having the top notes of the bass line get cut off or something.
Anyway, is there a website or .mp3 or something that has different tones labled by frequency?

I'm guessing you are looking at head units with a built in x-over? The sub x-over is a lowpass filter, meaning it will send frequencies of 125 hz and below to the sub amp. Typically a good x-over point to start with would be around 90-100. This can vary based on speaker size, sub size, any number of things. 200 is way too high to set a low-pass for the sub. At that point you may even hear vocals out of the sub, not good. What are you using for the sub amp? A decent amp will have built-in variable x-overs that can be set at 40-200 hz depending on the system. I'll stop there, short answer, yes 200 is too high, 125 may even be too high. Alpine or Pioneer you'll be happy for sure.

Anytime someone starts getting high freq in the subs it starts to sound awful. If your cd player has an amp mute to cut the sound off, except sound going to the external amp and you have a much higher freq you'll see that voices start to come through and distorts when the bass should be hitting.

My front speakers can't play low. They are Pioneers. They have even less bass than stock. My rear speakers are stock.

Why not tho if the sub can play those frequencies? My speakers don't play bass very loud anyway, so might as well use the sub for that.
I low pass at 80 hz, I figure that's around where sound becomes directional, and nothing worse than having half your music coming form behind you.
what do you guys have you HPF set at? same freq? overlap?
Mystic, don't you potential have a gap at about 70 hz?

My deck only has the options for 50Hz/80Hz/125Hz. I have it at 50Hz because 80Hz just makes it way too boomy. I'd love to try 60Hz or 65Hz though. My next deck will have adjustable controls. I just can't justify getting a new deck just for that. I'd have to step up to the Pioneer 9k series for that option.

Ok so right now I have my amp "frequency" **** set all the way up, which I think is 300Hz. (it might be 80Hz, as the documentation is not clear).
Right now it sounds awesome. I'm afraid if I get a head unit that limits it to 125Hz that I will be missing all the mid bass. My speakers don't do much mid bass so I have to have the sub play it. I turned down the frequency **** and it sounded more boomy and less musical. The midbass was gone. But my amp doesn't have the frequencies written around the **** so I don't know where it is.
So that's what I'm afraid of; the head unit limiting the sub frequencies to 125Hz and me losing my midbass.
What do you think?

My sub sounds just fine at <125Hz. The speakers are set to 80Hz, and they don't play hardly any mid bass. The sub can't reproduce higher frequencies as well inside the car. Look at the pic I posted, and stop worrying. It's actually damaging to the sub to play higher frequencies.

Dude I'm telling you mine sounds awesome when I turn the frequency up and it sounds shitty when I limit the frequency range.
However, because you are gearbox I will take your word for it. Isn't that pic you posted for YOUR sub tho? Afterall, you did say Actually, the drop-off happens around 80Hz, at least for my sub. I tried to find the specs for mine but I couldn't. All I know is the frequency range goes up to 1,000Hz.
I'm still a little worried about the 125-300Hz frequencies tho if I get that Pioneer deck.
Right now I'm more concerned with getting my fvcking remote bass control from Circuit City (see other thread).

If it sounds better at higher frequency, then you're gonna have to find a deck that goes higher than 125Hz. It's all personal taste. My pioneer is one of the best decks they make and still doesn't allow you to go any higher than 125Hz. Try to find your own sub specs.

Hi I'm dumb, I just looked at the DEH-8600 again today and the highest crossover point for the sub is 200Hz. Much better than 125Hz, even tho everyone assures me I won't need to go any higher than that. So if I remember correctly it was 50, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200Hz, or something like that.
