Ok, my sub sounds like crap
Yeah, plus MTX is notoriously designed for the deepest, booming bass. So thats not in your favor either. I would definitely nix the 12, especially if you could just return it and get a 10.
The BAs you saw at tweeter were expensive but worth it to some. I paid 960 for my Quarts and the sound quality is out of this world. Like you said, different strokes. In the mean time, definitley push the box up against the back seat and let the sub fire into your car.

I actually have an MTX, but it's the previous model with mirror cut design. Works fine for me. Good tips tho. Just return for a 10, even if it's the same brand. Return the amp too. Look at circuit city's reviews that customers post to get ideas.

Circuit City only carries 12's in the sub I got. Maybe I can have them order one or something.
They said I could get a refund on everything except installation, but they attached my amp to my box. They better still take it back.
So MTX amps are designed for boomy bass? How does the amp affect that?

It's not really the amp that makes bass boomy. The quality and type of amp class might affect it, but yours is way too much for what you're running. Return and get a smaller amp, especially if you're gonna run a 10.

Circuit city should carry the alpine in 10. Only other one there I would recommend is infinity. If you really want the alpine, have them order one. Both subs got good reviews from people.

This was the smallest amp they had. They might have had a smaller Audiobahn one but I heard so many people say stay away from Audiobahns cuz they overheat, etc.

I think it would be cool as hell to do a car w/ about 4 or so 8" subs ..... w/ RE8's or a JL8w3's ...... I have a pair of 8w3's in my truck and am really impressed w/ them. I tried the 12" Eclipse Aluminum sub from the Civic in the truck but hated it. If I hadn't just sold the Civic I'd redo the system w/ 8" subs. Perfect for rock type music.
FYI, an amp on your front highs would do wonders for their midbass performance. You wouldn't expect a sub to run of deck power, so don't expect the same from your highs either. I can't stress enough how much better highs sound off an amp vs deck power.

NO INTENTION TO HIJACK THIS THREAD - So this will be all I'll say in response to regularJoes comment and then I'll let it die and get back to IronFist's troubles.
RegularJoe, I knew a girl who had a ford probe. She had 4 JL 8s, MB Quart QMs up front and Quart 6" rear fill. System powered by a 6 channel mac amp and the rear fills off the deck. BEST sound I've ever heard quality wise!!

get either the infinity 1030w or alpine type e 10". i'd say the infinity, but thats me. throw it in a tiny box (like .7-.8cubes) and you should be happier with it. mtx amps aren't known for great crossovers, plus your deck is giving you none. an aftermarket deck with a sub output (and controls for that output) would be a good choice for you.

So if you have a deck with sub output and you adjust it, does the control on the sub stay where it is assuming it's a regular ****? What happens if you turn the deck sub all the way up and leave the amp gain all the way down? Or vice versa?

If I were to replace my amp, where could I get a smaller (less power I mean, cuz you said mine is too much already), inexpensive one? Would that be something I could do myself assuming I left all the wires and stuff in place? I mean it's just plugging in the amp and connecting it to the sub, right?

Joe, we recommended a lot of stuff in his other 2 threads. He went and got the Alpine 12. Lots of recommendations were 10's or 8's, cause we thought about his music he listened to, and the response he said he wanted. Still, he bought the Alpine 12. I guess he wanted to ehar it in a store, rather than take advice that was asked for and put it to use. Who knows?

Yeah, I wanted to hear it before I bought it, because everyone has different opinions on what sounds good. Would you buy an exhaust without hearing it yourself first just because someone said it sounds good? Same thing with subs.
The guy in the store said a 12 would work, and then he played Children of Bodom and Pantera (black metal and metal groups, respectively) on it for me and it sounded good. So can you blame me for getting it? I did get it to sound 100 times better than it sounded when I picked it up from Circuit City by adjusting it myself, but I'll still probably exchange it for a 10.
to everyone who has helped me.

Always, always, aways remember this:
In a store, they have display subs you can listen to. They will never sound like they sound in a store. The airspace is totally different inside the open store than it will in the confinements of an automobile, especially in the trunk. If you want to preview a sub, find one in a vehicle to listen to. Don't go on what you hear in the store. Because 10 times out of 10, it will sound totally different when installed. Also, remember, the guys in a store are trying to make a sale. They are conditioned to shed good light on their products. Matter of fact, that's part of their training. They are to sale products at the greatest profit margin. I never trust someone that is trying to sell me a product unless I know them personally, or, after asking them questions about it and determining their level of knowledge. And yes, I've bought exhaust without hearing it. Matter of fact, I've never been to a store with an exhaust demo. I read reviews from knowledgable sources, adn look at the specs and what attributes it has to determine if it will fulfill my needs/wants.

Seriously Ironfist would like an 8 I think. He doesn't seem to listen to songs with boomy music. That CD he tried had reall fast drum beats and stuff that my 10 was having a hard time with. That is, unless he puts in a little P. diddy every so often
A 10 will give a good compromise. It plays midbass okay like 100Hz stuff, but it also does well playing the lower, boomy bass. It's a good all-around sub. If you liked how mine sounded, then get a 10.

back to your question about the sub output controls on an aftermarket deck, think of it like playing music with your computer. the computer has an adjustable volume level (like the deck in the car would) and the speakers have a **** (like the amp). works exactly the same way.

I love my deck. A 13 band graphic eq for all speakers connected, and a separate adjustment for sub volume and level. My amp even has a little **** for quick bass adjust next to the driver seat.
yes Iron, one 10 would be good enough for you. Honestly, I'm the guy who started the suggestion of the 4 8s and I was never kidding. It would seriously be ideal for you. But if you wanna stay simpler, get the single 10 - it will be much, much better than the 12 - much. Oh and very important. Lets say the 10 has a recommended sealed enclosure volume range of like, .65 - 1.25. Stay .65. Use the smallest recommended enclosure volume for whatever woofer you get and stay with a sealed box not a ported.
