Eclipse 5444 - Cannot Format Memory Stick/Program ESN???
Eclipse 5444 - Cannot Format Memory Stick/Program ESN???
I was wondering if anyone could help me out - I just had an Eclipse 5444 installed and have been learning how to use it and such for the last week. I cannot format my memory stick however and I am unable to program the ESN to work with the memory stick - any ideas?
E-mail Sent to Eclipse:
I called them yesterday and they can't seem to work it out. I've tried different memory sticks that I had around the house as well as the one supplied with the HU. I had tried re-formating the memory stick through my sony cybershot and then trying to format it again in the deck - nothing seems to give. I hope something's not wrong with the HU - what do you guys think?
E-mail Sent to Eclipse:
I have just purchased and installed an Eclipse 5444 head unit and am unable to program the ESN security as I am unable to format the memory stick. No matter how many times I try to format the MS I still get the message MS INFO 2. I do follow the exact procedure stated in the manual however it does not seem to format. When I get to Format through the function button and it asks [OK?] I press and hold the [SEL] button for more than 2 seconds and then it beeps twice however I still get the MS INFO 2 message when trying to program ESN or use MS as the media source. Is there something wrong with my head unit or am I formatting the memory stick wrong? Any help as to how to format the memory stick correctly would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Eclipse 5444 MS
I'll have to look at mine tomorrow for you; I've got the 5444, and I have the MS ESN working. I believe the stick has to be a Magic Gate stick, but if you've tried the one that came with the deck you've covered that.
I don't have the manual in front of me to look up MS INFO 2, but I can check when I get in the car tomorrow.
I do seem to recall there was a setting I changed, so I'll try to get a step-by-step for ya.
Great HU, by the way.

Hm.m....
I've been trying to get that message and haven't pulled it off yet.
Have you tried ESN with a key CD? I'm assuming you switched the ESN type over to to memory stick. Course, if you can't play back....
Chances would be slim, but maybe the original MS was bad and it didn't like the type of the other ones.
I have to go to my install shop in the next couple of days (tint time)...I can ask the Eclipse wiz there if he has a clue. Maybe someone from the company will actually get back to you in the meantime.
At least there's a 3-year warranty, if all else fails!

I got a reply the next day from Eclipse and they told me to call their tech support #. I called and they tried a couple of things with me such as formatting the MS from a sony device then formatting it for deck use on the HU. It just won't format the MS. I went to my shop over the weekend for some more install - he called up a friend that had a similar problem and is now somewhat of a pro with the ESN and MS features as he spent hours on the phone with Eclipse - he couldn't figure it out
I'm going to give Eclipse a call tomorrow to see if they can figure anything else out. If not, my shop said they would have a new unit sent from Eclipse and just swap my HU for a new one. Thanks for the help though!

MS on Eclipse

1) Eclipse's ESN security allows you to use the memory stick in place of a key CD to reset the deck if the power is killed (as it would be if it were removed from the car).
2) You can record / playback music on the deck in ATRAC3 format.
3) You can do a configuration on Eclipse's website, download the data to the MS, and transfer it to the deck (time-align, etc.).
I only use the ESN feature.

Not if you're using it for ESN. You have 2 real options for ESN on the decks: key CD or code. You have to insert a MS to enter a code. Once you've entered it, you can reset the deck upon by either entering the code or just inserting the memory stick. You can then remove the memory stick again.
My MS sits at home, locked up. In all honesty, I couldn't tell you what my code was anymore (hence the memory stick).

Yeah - I would really like my MS to work but unfortunately it seems that I have a defective unit. I called Eclipse and I descirbed the problem again and the steps I've taken to fix it and they told me to have my dealer/installer to call them to confirm that the unit doesn't work properly. From there they will send me a new deck and my installer will just swap my old one out for the new one. It's kind of annoying but I guess I have no choice. I give Eclipse Tech Support an A+ however - they were extremely helpful in trying to work out the problem
