RaDAR DETECTOR PLACEMENT.....IDEAS...
I've decided, after one speeding ticket, I'm buying a radar detector now. I've been doing my homework, and since I live in VA, which uses the VG-2 radar detector-detector extensively, my choice was between the Passport 8500 and the Valentine One. The Valentine One has better features and I can still afford it, so I think I'm going with that.
Anyway, the reason for this post is; I need to figure out where to mount it. I think I'm going to buy the external display adapter, which means I have the display wherever I want to put it (planning on corner of A-pillar and dash). So, now that it doesn't need to be where I can see it, where should I put the main unit? I was thinking of making a fiberglass shell that looks like a gauge cluster to go ontop of the dash that has holed for the antennas or something like that. Whatd'ya think? Any ideas are welcomed. Remember, I do NOT need to see it. Actually, the point is for it to be as hard to see as possible.

I don't think the grill would work. Then, the rear radar sensor would be completely useless. Also, I don't think the housing is meant for it to be placed outside (waterproofing, etc...). I wish I could do that, but I don't think it would end well. I was thinking of either putting it, like you said, as high as possible, or on the dash, somehow concealed. The problem with high-up (the better option for sensativity) is: how do I hide it? I can make the cables longer; that's no concern.
I've personally seen good success at using a unit similar in design to the Bel Remote Radar Detector. The main radar remote fits right under the front bumper where license plates go (for states that use them) so that the little unit is flush with the plate. The remote laser detector fits nicely on the windshield right there at the rear view mirror mount with wiring snaked around front headliner molding around to left pillar molding, and down under dash to the little spot to the left of the DC outlet between the console and dash.
The flat area just to the left of the DC outlet and in front of the drink holder recesses can be dremeled out in less than an hour, with the 12V feeding the DC outlet easily tapped into for power to feed the unit.
It looks completely unobtrusive in this location, even for routine traffic stops is undetectable.
I'd post pics, but, alas, even though I only use it on trips outside my state, it's not legal to have one in my state, so you'll have to use your imagination.

the bumper idea sounds good, but that would ruin the rear detection. I was reading on the v1 site that, on motorcycles, you can put it inside of a fiberglass fairing unaffected. So, I was thinking; either make a small fiberglass bubble on my dash (with a fake faceplate so it looks like a CD player), or do some fiberglass enclosure attached to the roof. Where would I put it if I cut out a bit of the headliner?
Rear detection is only minimally affected with the main receiver in the front... plus the unit I sent the link on comes with remote front and rear laser detector units. The key to radar is REFLECTION of the signal from behind. In hilly and other areas not wide open there is plenty of bouncing signals to pick up on even if they are behind you.
Just use the cruise control button and you should be fine!
Speaking of cruise control... on uneven terrain, my cruise control setpoint automatically increases after I top a hill .. it gains a couple MPH each major hill and doesn't come back down later... Anyone else have this?

by the time iy alerts to laser...you're toast. The beam is so fast and narrow there is almost nbo detection from it bouncing off other cars. Radar can be detected rather easy,,,laser it much harder to get warning on.
