Optima Red Top: Confused about which model/Group# I should get.
I noticed in an older thread, people have used these Optima batteries:
Model #9004-003
Group #51(R or N?)
Group #74
I know Group #51 is our stock sized battery but I can't find it as a Red Top. Only as a Yellow Top.
What's the difference between these models? I've been looking all over for the battery and although I can find them, no store (not online) seems to want to help me. Sears is an official dealer of Optima, and if they don't have the one you won't they won't special order it. AutoZone says Group 51 only exists for the Yellow Top (after ordering a RedTop from them and received a Yellow two days later.)
I REALLY need a new battery and I want this one but it seems like I can't find much help. It looks like SummitRacing.com is my only option, and if it's not - what are my other options on how I can obtain the right Red Top?

Get a yellow top, they are better for audio
I am not sure if you want the normal or reversed terminals, but if my memory is on the ball, you would want the reverse terminals.

You want a yellow top. You can deep cycle (completely deplete) a yellowtop all you want and not hurt it. Red top is more powerful but can't handle the deep cycling. Blue top is for marine use and is meant more to be slowly drained over a long period of time- and shouldn't be deep cycled.

That's not helping me towards what I want more than what you think I need... in fact you just said it yourself. "They're better for audio." Well, why would I need that if my stereo is stock?
I'm already aware of the capability differences between the Red, Yellow and Blue, thanks.

What would you need it for in a Civic if not for audio?
Since this is an audio forum, generally we can assume any questions are audio related if you do not specify. You didn't say anywhere that your stereo was stock.

Thank you opto.
MegaHurtz... it's called "I.C.E. & Electrical. Maybe I could've posted in Products & Parts, but since everything that works electrically in a car begins by a battery, this forum looked more reasonable.
My second post said in bold I had nothing worth the Yellow Top on my car, and I don't plan on having anything on it like that anyways.
It's all good though.

Seriously, red top will help you for the first few seconds of starting. You can just use a stock battery for that. At least with a yellow top, you don't have to worry about anything draining and killing the battery. Even the yellow top is a better starting battery than stock. So red is just a waste for you. Spend the extra $$ on something else and just get a stock battery.

Then can I ask what you need an upgraded battery for? Just curious
So then why spend a mint on an expensiv battery that he doesn't need?
... he said because it's what he wants.
I know this is noobish, but...I have about 550 watts RMS running in my trunk, and am looking at a new battery. Should I get a stock starter battery and a yellow top in the trunk, or can I just get one and be ok? Don't mean to hijack the thread or anything; should be a pretty simple answer.

^^^I'd say Yellow. I think that MegaHurtz and I can agree on the fact that Yellow is fine to start your car with but the deep cycling from the Yellow has the advantage for your situation.
i just went to advanceautoparts.com, and put in that I have a 2002 Honda Civic, and they say the D51 is what fits our cars. Since the title of the thread IS about which model to use...

group 74 (standard size, can buy at an autoparts store such as advance, etc.) will fit fine. you can't use the plastic battery condom thing that slides over the stock size, but it will fit.

Im not trying to prove no point, the only obvious point i see is that you have no need for a red or yellow top

alot of people think that Optima batteries are a sham and a waste of money...some people think it is better just to go with the biggest battery that you can fit in your car with the most cold cranking amps (regardless of price).

Well, I got what I want and I'm happy.
I think a lot of people get a lot of things for their cars that I think are crap. For me, I choose to learn the ups and downs from my experience, and all I need is the interest in it, as well as enough positive feedback. I got that. So down the line, when my next battery is some cheap-o Wal-Mart battery, or an Optima Yellow, I'll make my own judgement based on what i want. But as far as my knowledge about batteries has taken me along with the experience i will have seeing how the battery performs, I'm content. It suits me.
