u cant get everything u get with drivesoft on a reg computer. remeber the screen they give u is touch screen. along with the programs that comes standard with the system. if you try to do exactly what drivesoft did you will spend well over 3 grand.

The computer hardware can't run you 3 grand. A 7" touch screen would run you about a grand. That leaves 2 grand for everything else.

Hard Drive < $80
Small Mobo/CPU combo < $300
RAM < $100
Video Card < $75
Case & Power Supply < $150
Miscellaneous Stuff I'm forgetting < $100

That's only about $800. We'll say $ 1000 to be generour and include the $50 software. That still saves you a grand over Drivesoft.

Don't get me wrong, I think Drivesoft is really nice and I wish I had it, but $3 grand is definitely overpriced unless it comes with all the extras like navigation unit, etc (which are listed as options).

He is right that is overpriced you can build a shuttle pc (250 - 350) to fit inside the car then all you need is the touch screen which you get online for about 100 to 150. then you need to get the software. I'm pretty sure if you search on google you will find some stuff, I remeber i was techtv once this guy had a pc rigged to his nextel so he could use gps etc.

well my friend got all the goodies on her's everything they have posible. that's why it came up to 3 grand. i do IT/MIS work and have done so for many years now, and yes you can build a similar system but wont be close to what this thing can do. untill u sit down in front of the unit and start useing it. you will see thats its not as easy to put something togethere like this. just like on there website of what comes with the system is what she got now for 3grand i dont think its that bad of a deal.

dj, I can understand that its a fantastic unit, it looks pretty awesome! furthermore, it is my hope that some of their stuff will be usable on external computers, such as XM and GPS control, to those who want it without the entire unit.

but consder for a moment those who already have a computer in their car, complete with integrated keyboard, mouse, USB touch screen (of any size between 5" and 17", the 17" touchscreen is only $160 from DWW), wireless networking (but not wireless internet without a cell phone), etc, etc, etc.

this person will already have:

CD
DVD
touchscreen of X size, 7 inch or 10 inch or 17 inch, even.
winXP, or 2k, or 98, etc.
office
cd burning
media organizer
mp3
video
FM


the main problem with those of us running a computer in a car is the 7" screen can be difficult to use with so mch that can be done with a computer!

this software provides us with a most excelent solution, not for all the features it has (most, if not all of which we can or already do have) but for its abilities to easily use them!

im not advocating not buying this, persay, but it would be foolish for those of us running a laptop and screen already in the car to put down three G for something we already have 75% of!

Now the $50 investemnt for the software is starting to make a little more sense....

i wonder what the base price on it is? dj02 said his friend got hers fully loaded, and for the price, it doesnt seem like a bad deal at all. i would rather pay 3 grand for that instead of a $2500 for an eclipse AVN for example (AVN is really cool btw).

I have noticed that you guys have said a few nice things about Drivesoft Car Computing Solution. We just wanted to say thanks.

Drivesoft is a real company with 9 to 5 support for our car audio dealer.

The reason you have not seen us on PC based site such as this one is because we operate our company on the car audio business side and not PC enthusiast side.

We have been doing in car PC since 1997.

We do every thing in-house. Hardware and software. Case building, Specialty in stall parts for installing it in to cars etc. As far as spec. I think you guys know what we are using.

As for as the price:
I hope you can see that we are Car Audio Product and not Computer product oriented. Meaning we have many more expenses then just sitting in a big office shipping out PC products. We are no different then your Alpine or Pioneer car audio reps etc. We travel, train and support many car audio stores in the USA. We also build Demo cars and present them at all major shows. It is a costly business when bring the PC Incar Computing to the Car Audio world. Remember the people we sell to do not have the knowledge of you guys so they put everything back on us. Two companies that have tried to go in to the car audio world have already failed because they used their PC Computer supporting and selling knowledge to go in to the car audio world. Car audio dealer expect a different type of service the PC buyer. Reason is because they are buying a PC based product that they know nothing about. So yes we do make a fair profit on our product.

Someone was adding up prices about parts and I wish it was that easy and that was all we needed. We always use the latest part and we have more then just what was said. IE. external hard drive and external DVD come with the unit and Compact Flash to run to OS. Our touch screens are new and they cost a lot more then 100 dollars. Also I did not see any one say anything about 12volt power. Our power supplies are 12v and ignition controlled which cost us 200 just for that item. You also need to also think about build cost and custom cable we use inside. We do not use of-the-self cables that are to long etc an that will move around in side the unit while driving on rough roads etc. We need to pay employees to assemble them as we do not buy pre-made pc out of China like the other companies do. Lastly you need to remember that we sell to car audio dealers that then mark up the price to $3400. So if you add all this up you may then see that it is a fair price. Remember that price is retail which is set to what the market will bare. Most of the fully loaded systems like alpine and kenwood can run up to 4000 and they do not do what we can.
