can you explain the battery test to me? isnt it something like if you touch the speaker wire to the battery and the woofer moves out, its in phase and if it moves in, its out of phase? do i have the right idea? (i'm still learning, A LOT!)

use a small battery like a 9 volt or something and connect it to the speaker if it opos out then you have it wired correctly as in + on battery = + on speaker and same for negative side. If is sucks the cone in then you have it wired reverse. Remember to only temporarily connect the battery to the speaker just long enought to make it pop in or out.

i'll hopefully be able to check it tomorrow, it sounds wierd when its balanced, but when i balanced to the left or to the right, it sounds fine, its just centered it sounds funny.

I ran into this issue 2 weeks ago installing my Alpine MVR-F340 amp - when I pulled the Poweracoustik out, I didn't pay attention to what was hooked up where. The rears were easy to figure out but the fronts were not. I was in the same boat you were.
I have Monster cable - and I KNOW the printed side is normally used for positive but there was no way to be sure - luckily I was just able to see the underside of my crossover good enough by gently pulling the panel back. Checked the crossover specs in the Boston manual and I was able to verify fairly easily.
Battery test won't work unless you pull the whole (&%^%*^ panel off...and I was also loathe to do it unless it was the last resort, and I'm **** enough about it to where I would have....glad I didn't need to do it.

my xover is in the door, so gonna have to pull the door panel off. i can do it in like 30 seconds, its not hard.
you can get a speaker popper, its a snap. many shops will have one you can borrow real quick
its got leads out that you hook to + and minus, and make the speaker go "pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop..."
the box has a microphone on it and picks up the sgnal, then has a green and red light for in phase or out of phase. its real handy when you are working behind the dash checking polarity of rear deck speakers!
