Sedan: rear speakers & my mistake
Sedan: rear speakers & my mistake
New Year's Day, I changed out the rear speakers in my sedan. Time consuming as it was, I like the sound of the new speakers. However, I didn't reinstall the rear deck as carefully as I should have, and I broke one of the white plastic clips. Yikes!
It didn't seem like a big deal at the time, but on my first drive after that, I noticed the rear deck was rattling something fierce. I had to go to the dealer to get some clips, but I did not have time to take out the rear deck until this weekend. Putting up with that rattle for over a month has been making me nuts!
Anyway, I decided to take out the rear seat this time around, which I did NOT do the first time, having seen other posts saying that it was not necessary. It was SO much easier to get the bolster bolts out (and then back in when I was finished), and I was able to use the seat bolt to re-ground my amp.
My point after all this babbling? Don't make my mistake and only halfway follow the DIY's that folks have been kind enough to share with us. I've learned my lesson.

i popped up the seat to use the bolt for grounding w/out removing the seat
got the deck off in around 20 minutes my first try. now it's like 5
i wouldn't be surprised if you still have rattle. search for read deck rattle and you'll see how to fix it. i'm not criticizing, just offering a counterview.

Hey, I understand completely. I imagine that most people on this site are a lot quicker at this stuff than I am. (I'm always a little paranoid that I'm going to break something)
Thankfully, the rear deck is now nice and tight. While I was replacing the clip that had snapped off, I noticed that the two clips closest to the rear windshield did not stay in the deck when I popped it off - they were still attached to the sheet metal.
Rather than try and slide the deck in just right to catch those two clips, I used needlenose pliers and carefully popped them out of the metal. I slid them back into their slides in the plastic deck, and I was able to get the deck snapped back into place completely. It's nice and quiet now.

I installed the same type I have up front: Pioneer 6 1/2" 1667's (discontinued). The opening was a little bigger than the speaker, so I am thinking that 6 3/4" speakers might fit.
I think the reason Crutchfield is so conservative about their fitments is the fact that the holes will not line up properly with most aftermarket speakers (there are only three holes back there). I had to drill holes to install mine, and it was kind of a pain, but not too bad. There was a tiny bit of space all the way around, but I put in a layer of Dynamat before I installed the speakers, so it fits nicely now.
