what would you all recommend?
ok, I'm not very "knowing" about car audio. I want a simple system, I want it to sound nice inside and on occasion if I turn it up I want it to be heard outside, but not like wake the dead loud. I was thinking maybe one 12 in the trunk and amp and maybe replace the rear speakers. any advice would be appreciated.
First get a HU. Next components up front on an amp. Then a nice 12" sub. That would be a good system.
Pick some stuff out and we can go from there. There are countless threads on each of these.

defenitely upgrade teh front before the back. when you go to a club or a concert, do you turn your back from the music? makes more sense to have the sound in front of you.
as to what to get, its all in the budget. you gonna spend 200 dollars, or are you gonna drop 10 grand, or where in between.

i think one 12" would do it. i heard the alpine type-r 12" knocks pretty good for its price.
I have an audiobahn set-up which are 2 12" , 1 2-channel amp & a 1 fared capacitor. i've had these for almost 5 months+ and no problem still at all. but their are other brands you can go for; kicker, JL, rocksford fosgate, mtx..etc.
whats your budget?

budget will help, here are some places to look at to get some ideas:
www.woofersetc.com
www.sounddomain.com
www.thezeb.com
www.ikesound.com
www.onlinecarstereo.com
and some sub manufacturers:
www.edesignaudio.com
www.respl.com
www.treoengineering.com
www.adireaudio.com
(can't think of the image dynamics url right now)...
it'd be a whole lot easier to give you an idea though with a budget. i'd say go HU, and replace and amp the stock speakers, then amp and sub. if your budget allows, i'd replace all at once. also, i'd say a single sub would be appropriate for you. a single 10 or single 12.

I would replace all the speakers and get one sub. It will be plenty of base. Then later you can amp the speakers and add tweeters. Sound deadening around the speakers with dynamat also helps make them sound cleaner.
