2 amps

i have a sony amp, i think i need more power for my 12inch rockford Sub, i am thinking of getting a second one, the same kind and attaching both to the sub, is that possible? and how do i connect them.

Sub FEATURES:
• P5 Design
• Class D Mono amp
• 200W x 1 RMS @ 4 ohms
• 400W x 1 RMS @ 2 ohms
• 800W Max Power
• Small chassis
• Variable 50-300HZ 12db/oct Low Pass Filter
• 34.8 (L) x 34.4 (W) x 11.7 (H) cm

this is the Sub i have
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/pro...d=&newdeptid=9

12" Punch HX2 DVC (dual 4 ohm) subwoofer
Fiberlock cone
Santoprene rubber surround
3" aluminum voice coil former
dual-laminated progressive flat spider
LXcursion cast basket
Vented bumped back plate
consealer gasket
rubber magnet boot
500 watts RMS/1000 watts Peak

also correct me on my math, the amp is powering 400W right now, so if i connect both i will get 800w to the sub, is that correct??

Lucid484 is an unknown quantity at this point
it's possible but not totally recommended.the amps need to bea perfect match as with all their settings.plus youll be putting 800w into a 500w sub...it will heat up real quick and shorten it's lifespan alot!if you want ill sell you my sony amps....I replaced my sub amp and will be replacing my high end soon...they work great and have never had any problems.

Regularjoe is on a distinguished road
Its a involved process. You would need two of the exact same amps. Set them to the same levels w/ an osciloscope. I doubt you have one.

Also w/ that amp it gets you nothing. By hooking up an amp to each coil, each amp powers one 4 ohm coil, so each amp outputs 200 rms. If you hook both coils in parallel to one amp, both coils act like a single 2 ohm sub, so the one amp puts out 400 rms. Same power w/ one or two of those amps in the end.

So, basically don't waste your money.

Exactly what Regularjoe said...two amps will give you the same power as you have now. What makes you think you need more power?

^^ His Rockford sub is gonna get louder than those subs you just listed.

The only sub I would consider is the TypeR, and thats gonna be about the same as the HX2 that he has, with a bit more SQ perhaps. With his SONY amp though, there wouldent be much difference.

well the thing is, i know my Sub can handel more power, the last decible reading i got was only 129. the sub is rated 500w, or a max or 1000, and sont over rate there products too much, so i know i can make it louder.

You won't notice much difference unless you double the power and even then, it's probably not worth the extra $$. You would need to get a single more powerfull amp if you really want to though. Hifonics or Rockford perhaps. Look into 600-1000 watts, although if you get a 1000 watt amp, make sure you are careful with gain settings.

I would suggest spending the money to just get another sub instead of an amp. In my experiences, more speaker displacement has a tendency to be more effective than adding extra power to an existing sub....

Also, maybe build a better enclosure for the sub. This could make a huge difference too if the one you are using now isn't optimal....
