just pull the center console out, there are 9 clips holding it in all around might I add, just use a plastic pryer and unclip one part, then use ur hand to pull the console straight out...easy No need to remove ashtray area

not THAT easy. there are 2 screws that hold the console's metal brackets in place. at least thats how my 03 is. i removed the trim peice around the shifter. then the trim peice underneath that. then undo two screws by the cup holders, and prythat whole peice off. then the cig lighter piece comesoff. then with a short handled phillips head, you can remove the two screws holding the console in place. from there, you just pry off the center console, which is held in by 9 pressure clips. goodluck!

hmm ok do what he said then ^^, because on my 02 it doesn't have screws holding it down, just clips. But on the part about pulling the cig/ashtray out, u don't have to remove the shifter console, just use a thinnnn dull metal pryer, pry one of the corners out a bit, then stick the plastic pryer in there and use it to pry it open, finally, pull up and out and it will come out...wiggle it alittle while ur pulling so u don't break the tabs down under. that's my way of doing it anyway

i still think i'm right, i hope i don't come off as a a-hole. ive done installs on both 01/02 and 03's. the main diff is that you DO gotta remoive the shifter console peices to get to screws that hold down the cig lighter peice. which in turn covers the two screws that hold the headunit frame int place.

now that I think of it, u ARE right, there are two screws that hold the stock headunit bracket together. lol, but there are no screws that hold down the cig lighter piece for sure, cause I just removed it yesterday. unless u put the stock metal brackets back in after u put in a new HU, then yea u would have to take off the two screws each time u wanna remove the center console. I've lefted my two screws off ever since I removed my stock unit that I forgot about it...sorry for the misinformation, reytito is right.

We've been through this so many times, but let's do it again:

1. Remove area around the shifter. On MT models, remove the shift ****. Pull like hell around the inside of the shift boot, you won't break it. The entire black piece comes off.
1a. On AT models, you first remove the silver ring around the shifter, then the black piece that extends from the e-brake to the cupholders.
2. Remove 2 screws from below where the black piece was, you can see them on either side of the console looking straight down.
3. Remove the U-shaped trim that holds the lighter element and extends down to the E-brake. There are 6 clips on the sides, push them out. Then pull towards the back of the car, and the entire piece should come out.
4. Read instructions for 01-02.

Hope this helps.

the mt model for removing the shift boot/center console, you first pull out the doored pocket part, then you remove the two screws at the back bottom, then the two screws under the shift boot, where the piece with the doored pocket was, then you push in the center of the two clips on each side of the front, then you can remove the center console. don't believe me, here's a link to a diy of removing the center console. http://www.madstatic.com/2k1civic/diy/cconsole/ this is identical to how it was for my 01 ex coupe. as far as the cig lighter piece, mine just pulls off. then there are two screws in there (look up) that you remove, then you can take hu/ac control bezel out.

I just installed a headunit in my 04 EX MT today... (I'm just highlighting problem areas, so steps will be skipped in between so I don't have to repeat what everyone else has said)

Unscrew the shift **** and pull it off.

The easiest place to start pulling that larger trim piece up is at the small corners. The ones that are right at that little pocket area right in front of your center console. Pop the corners up with a flathead screwdriver.

Pop out the first two/three clips. Then use the flathead again and pry up the rectangular part of the console that is around the shift boot area. (not the oval area where the boot is)

Then use a phillips to unscrew the screws on each side that are holding the next clip.

After that, everything else should pop out just fine. And just follow all the other directions.

My highest recommendation for getting it started though, is start at those two thinnest corners. The are the ones closest to you and the passenger. Smooth sailing from there.

I also recommend to use the flat head to pop out the whole stereo area. Start on one of the bottom corners. And be SURE to cover the screwdriver with a thin piece of tap or something so you don't scratch up your car. I had seen in the DIY that it said to push it from underneath, but that didn't help me at all. The flathead worked the best in my case.

I wish I had a digi cam so I could've taken pics as I was doing it tonight.

Questions? Just ask...
