installation price
I need to know what I should expect to pay for my installation. What I'm putting in is.....
head unit
dash kit
6.5's
6x9's
1 4channel amp
1 mono amp
2 12's
sub box
and I have a wiring kit
I went to get a quote from someone and he told me $300 and he said that it would take
about 3/4 of the day to complete. Is this price reasonable and why would it take 6 hours
to complete? Is he just saying that to make me think it's a really big job? I know that you
have to pretty much take the car apart to install it, that's why I'm not doing it, but should
it really take 6 hours?

i agree, DIY, but i'm not one to talk, i had my friends shop put in my amp and subs
.
atleast do the door and rear deck speakers yourself, its easy and it will be good for you. you should know how to take apart and put back together parts of your car and it may bring the price down a little.
FYI, for my amp and subs i paid $100 but then again it was my friend who priced it, haha!

Yes, it will take about 6 hours. It takes 6 hours because he has to run a wire through the firewall to the trunk, RCA's from the HU to the trunk, that involves removing most of the plastic trim on the floor and the rear side panels and seats to install the rear speakers, then he's gotta take your doors off and mount your fronts. And then to top it off he has to make an amp rack of some sort, probably open your rear seats and stuff MDF in there to drill the amps onto. Now he's gotta put everything back together and tune everything. $300 is pretty reasonable.
Average cost around here is:
HU: $50
Front Speakers: $65
Rear Speakers: $75
1st Amp Install: $100
Each amp thereafter install: $50
If you can though I would DIY...it's a fun long day or weekend with friends if you've never done it, and a learning experience.

Doing it right is a long process and it takes quite a bit of time. There is a lot to do. At a shop I would say it would take all day. Doing it myself probably 2 days or more.
Look at my car. My last project was to take my amp and subs out. Then replace them w/ 2 new amps and a single sub. Plus mount the amps on the custom board. It took me 12 hrs of work across two days in my garage. Thats with the front speakers, rear speakers, and HU already installed. Plus the power wires and RCAs were already run to the trunk.
I would say $300 is fair considering the amount off work required.
HU = $30-50
Fronts = $40-60
Rears = $40-60
Amp1 = $50-100
Amp2 = $50-100
Sub = $30-60
So $240-$430 ......

$300 is pretty reasonable for all the stuff you're installating (like that word
), and it sounds like you have a coupe, the rear end of the coupe SUCKS!! those huge plastic panels and that rear deck, its hard to work around, especially first timers.
you also mentioned back problems, if its that serious, get it done by someone, no need to risk your health in any way over some stereo equipment.
btw, what specifics can you tell us about the stuff you're installing? brands and models.

It's all alpine.
head unit: 9815
6.5's: type r
6x9's: type r
subs: 12in type r
mono amp: mrd-m500
4channel: mrv-f540
subzone dual sealed box
wiring kit: streetwires multi amp kit
Also what do you think would be the best way to mount the amps because only one of the amps will fit on the box? Should I have one on the box and one on the back of the seat?

first, i'd like to say thats a nice list of equipment.
i wouldn't put any of the amps on the sub box, gives thieves a 2 for 1 deal if they happen to break into your trunk, but i notice that some people do it, so its really what you prefer. i have both of my amps mounted to the back of my seat, and i like it that way (for now). i find myself moving my sub box a lot, and often, taking it out to make room in the trunk, i would think thats a hard thing to do if there is an amp mounted to back of the box.
i dont think this will help you any, but i would suggest not doing rear speakers, just leave the stock ones if you want rear speakers. its gonna be a pain for the installers to install, and you'll save a ton if you dont get them, you'll be saving on the speakers, you will save money by downgrading your 4 channel to a 2 channel, and you'll save on the install. thats just a suggestion though, i did the same as you did, and then ended up ditching the rears and 4 channel.

I think it tok me about 12 hours total when all added up to first install my stuff. 8 hours the first day and about 4 hours the next. I had to put in a hu, front speakers, two amps, and a sub box with two subs......
The worst part was the fact that within 3 days of installing my stereo i found this neat web site 7thgencivic.com, that had DIY for installing a hu and told me where to punch through the firewall and how to take apart the rear deck and side panels and how to take apart the doors......out of the 12 hours i spent putting it in, i'd say atleast 4 hours were spent scratching my head, drinking more beer to try to attain liquid knowledge, and cursing at my car trying to figure out how it came apart.
I'm so glad i did it myself in the longrun though, for the next 4 yrs (when i'll be trading my car in), i'll know the ins and out and how to do anything to fix any problem with my stereo. My previous car which sucked so bad i will not mention what it was here, took my 6 hours to first install the stereo, after getting the hang of it though, i could eventually remove and re-install everything in about 45 mins....
if you have back problems, maybe you have a friend with an audio interest who could help do it for you? That way you'd save $300 or so and know how to do it yourself. If not i'd have to agree $300 give or take is a good price for the whole install.
Good luck whatever u choose
