Gauge Cluster swap

Looking for some info from anyone who may have swapped a gauge cluster from an LX or SI to a DX. As we all know the DX doesn't come with a tachometer which at first wasn't much of a deal for me but is quickly becoming a pain in the ***. I hate the look of the dash mounted aftermarker tach's so I'm seriously considering going with a swap. I found one from an LX at a salvage yard. Has anybody done this swap or maybe know anything about what's involved? Is it a sort of 'plug and play' deal or will I need extras? Quick response would be appreciated on this, I'm going to have to move fast if I want to buy that cluster.

i have done this swap, it a plug and play swap, really easy to install, but you will lose your current mileage, i had about 8k on my car and the cluster had about 11k, i just waited till i reached 11k then i swap my cluster, it off by like a few miles

AWESOME!!!! I was hoping it was straight swap. The mileage thing kind of blows. My car only has 56xx kms on it (I did VERY LITTLE winter driving) and most civics tend to have high mileage, I'd prefer to wait and swap for the same mileage too but if the one I get has high #s it may be hard to resist. Thanks for the info man, much appreciated.

I have done this too. I had 10k miles when I bought my cluster and it had 13k. I just waited till I hit 13k. Like he said its fairly simple and took me all of 30 minutes to make the swap. Make sure you get an LX though because EX have abs brakes, LX and DX don't, so the abs light will always be on if you buy the EX cluster.

I just thought of something else. The guy asked me if it had side air-bags. Apparently theres a difference. I'm not sure, I don't know much about the other models. So basically.... if I get a cluster from an LX model I'll be safe? 30 mins and I'm done, on my way to getting the most out of my gears and no more shifting by feel?

well he saying if you get a EX cluster the ABS light will alway be on, since dx dont have abs, so that why u would want a LX cluster

sorry, I meant the guy at the auto-salvage place. When he was asking the details (model/year/etc) he just asks "with or without side air-bags?" and I'm kind of like...'uhmmm, without...I guess'. I'm going to call him back tomorrow and make sure it's from an LX. Regardless it should work then, right?

You are correct. LX is perfect swap. However I am talking about a swap b/t a 2001 to another 2001 or 2002. I have a 2002 Civic and I swaped in a 2001. It works perfectly. I heard that the 2003 cluster is different from previous models but I am not sure. I felt so ghetto not having a tach and not knowing when to shift, but now perfect shifts every time. Well almost

You're right, TiM3, 03 Vics have a different gauge cluster. You can check out my ride. I have a pic of the 03 gauge cluster.

You can buy a new cluster, but your mileage will start from zero, which will be illegal. I went like the rest, waited to match up my mileage.

something came to light today while i was at work. how the hell am i going to get this thing in and keep everything legit. my car is under warranty for 5 years 100 000 kms. right now i'm less then 1 year and at about 5600 kms. i called honda and asked them about it. seems its been done before as the guy knew right away the process. the problem is in my town there are no honda dealerships and *NOBODY* in town will touch this with a 10 foot pole. how did you guys go about your swaps?

cant you reset the mialage on a new/different cluster? i thoght i heard this once...
and it sholdent matter if you have side air bags or not, i think its just an option you can choose when you get the car. if you have them you have plastic things on the outsides sides of your seats

the only way to reset the cluster is taking it to the dealer, and cost alot for them to do it, well you can alway put back on your dx cluster, if it effect your warranty

I've heard some Honda dealerships will put a sticker on the door panel noting the difference in mileage if they do the swap. I don't know why they won't bother with it? Its not illegal that I know of. I went to my dealership and the guy even said he'd do it for me for free b/c its real easy. But they might have different laws where you live I guess.

If I find an lx cluster I will buy it and sell it to you guys. I actually have a seller that I won a cluster from ebay, but he said it got stolen before he could give it to me. He said I will be the first to know when he gets a new one in. I'll let you guys know.

Of course. Although it depends on if I have money in the bank, right now I'm living pay check to pay check. That's the life of a college student for you. And don't worry I won't rip you off unless I really need the money, j/k.
