Changing dash color

I know there's DIY for changing the color of your dash but that involves gels. I've actually done that and it came out really crappy, all my buttons looked off-white. Maybe I didn't have the right color gel but still, I wanna know if there's a way to forget about the gel thing all together and just change the light source to blue for example.
So my question is, can those light bulbs or LEDs (don't even know what they are) be replaced with blue ones? If I'm gonna change my gauges to indiglo I wanna have the rest of my dash light up the same color that's why, and I want it to look like the VWs not like an old probe. Anyway, help me out here.

you COULD replace the LEDs with blue ones but it's a pain in the because it has have the correct voltage and resistance.

That souldn't be too hard, once I find out what the voltage and resistance of the current ones is, I can just buy that in blue. I'm more concerned with the difficulty of actually getting them in. I don't even know if I can get to the LEDs to replace them that's all. And I don't know if it's worth the trouble or the gels will do just fine if I do it right.
Did any of you guys change to colour of your dash?
