oil filter wrench
oil filter wrench
i'm going to change my own oil for the first time
(had the dealer do it the first 4 times), and will
be using a brand of oil filter that has a nut at the
end of the cap, so you don't need to use a
special oil filter wrench. problem is, the filter
that is on there right now is a Honda filter. is
there a way i can get it off without the special
wrench? i dont want to buy one just to use it
one time. also, i'd rather not use it once and
return it to the auto store.

Just in case you didn't know make sure the engine is nice and cool, if not watch out for the burn... but that way it's easier to remove the filter with some rubber gloves or even gettin somethin rubbery and wrap it around the filter to give it a nice crank...peace and have fun

yea the dealer tightens it reaaaaaaallly hard - i hate it. I couldnt get it off with my hands so this is what i did ... reaaaaally messy but what can you do?... I drove a screwdriver through it with a hammer and and used the handle to spin it off. reeeealy messy. make sure you drain as much oil as possible before doing that.

Use a belt and wrap it around the filter then tug hard on the belt with one hand and the other on the filter. I use an old leather belt and it has never failed me.

There's a reason why the dealer tightens it so tight - it's to prevent oil leakage. If you look closely at the instructions for the OEM Honda filter, it says to tighten it a certain # of turns (which is much more than handtight).
