A company called Beltronics accutally makes the Radar guns Cops use. I suggets buyin form them. The thing about radar detectors is some of them can be really really really crappy for it's price. I had a beltronics and it was one of the lower models, it was 160 bucks, and I LOVED IT! Barely any false radaring 360 degrees SWS VG2 alert..it has everything. Someone stole it =( RIte now I got a COBRA which has a really bad name and its not as good as the Bel but it is the best model Cobra has...I got it really cheap off ebay for 150, normally its around 180. It has the same thing as the Bel but a compass but it gives a lot more flase alarms and it has a late response to it, especially in high speeds...I got a ticket goin 100+ the Cobra failed to get it.
I would go with Beltronics! You wont regret it!

We're just using instant on radar now so that when we hit the transmit button on the unit to get your speed, the device is already pointing at the suspected violators vehicle and it turns on and grabs the speed all at once. So, when you get the alert, we have already obtained the speed.
Also, you don't need a radar reading to issue a speeding summons. It can be issued on observation too. So, they're really a false sense of security in my opinion.

I think you can do some research on the web, and in some of the motoring media. I know there is a web site that rates them and explains the options ect. I just can find it right now.

Go Valentine 1. Though I agree with QCKSILVR, the V1 has saved my *** about 5 times now. And yes, once while the cop was using the instant on. And the arrows let you know where its coming from. I've gotten 'hit' from front, back, and side, and the V1 was right on each time. Does give some false hits, but once you've used it a few weeks, you can usually tell which are false and which are true, especially if you travel the same routes. Does cost $400, but as I always say..it does pay for itself.

Are there any radar detectors that you can "hide"
So a passenger(father) would not be able to tell that you have one.
That depends on if you have an old detector. Some newer ones are stealthy. Again too, that depends on how up to date the fuzz equipment is.
I have just bought a Cobra 6060 just to get something cheap because I am still a little skeptical about radar detectors. It costed me $70 and it seems to work, well I least I have not recieved any tickets. But there are a lot of false alarms. Does anyone know exactly how they work? Does it catch the signal before or after it hits your car. In otherwords does it like send out a little sheild to give the driver prior warning or does it just give the warning when your car is hit.

valentine and escort 8500 both r very good but valentine has more functions, functions u might never have time to notice if they r actually workin or not,i will settle for the escort,it just looks plain sexy to be inside a civic
Bel 980 all the way my buds have them too and no tickets so far. Even if I am not speeding I still like to know where the possible cops are just in case I may have to roll down my windows since I have Limo Tint But yeah u pay for what u get, either Bel or Valentine all the way

Whoa! That site that was linked to has detector/defuser license plate frames! Stealthy!
I don't know how a defuser works, but I would imagine that if a cop scans you and gets no reading back, it's going to be noticed.

#1: connie, you're a big stupid jerk face.
#2: Qcksilver, you rock.
#3: The best radar detectors are the escort passport 8500 and the Valentine 1. I went with the escort because it's $100 cheaper and is always in the top couple of detectors in every test on .http://www.speedzones.com. The V1 is either halfway down the list or #1, so it's inconsistently the best. Also the escort has the best "on-the-fly" false reduction available. The only better false reading reduction is from one company that has a built in GPS, so that as you get a false reding in the same location over and over again, it tunes it out.
#4: I almost never speed now that I have my detector because it makes me really paranoid every time it goes off. Save $200+ and just burn a CD of loud beeping every couple of minutes, then when you hear the beeps slam on the brakes and make sure you're under the limit.
my 2 cents.
