DIY roof rack

I'm thinking about making a roof rack for my 97 civic hatchback. I will have no problem making the rack itself, I'm just wondering how to mount it? How are the yakima and thules with the rails mounted?

Aftermarket roof racks mount between the upper door sill and the door. You can see it in this pic:

Thanks. I thought it was something like that.. Probably be easiest to see if I can just buy mounts then, or look on craigslist for a used one..

Yea I agree. Used ones or seeing if you can just buy the mounts would be best.
