pretty much get the best or nothing. The cheap ones are useless.

Couple of good ones.

Escort 8500 x50

Valentine One

Beltronics pro x65

They range from the $200-300 range on ebay and $300-400 retail.

Yeah, you definately get what you pay for.
I bought a cheapo cobra at work cuz I got 75% off and it's pretty much useless. By the time it goes off I'm right next to the cop.
My bro has the Escort Passport 8500 X50 and it works wonders. You can't even see the cops when it goes off cuz they're so far away. He drives like a tard but never gets tickets.
Although when we both floored it by a cop, the cop turned on his radar and we took off. I ducked off in a neighbor hood and my bro was tryin to make it home. Next thing u know there's 4 sheriffs swarming the area. They pulled my bro over but didn't clock him cuz he was goin to fast. and they were like...wheres the little siver car with the funny headlights? HAHA

if its only 70% acccurate then why bother even getting one. You might as well just be extra watchful of cops in my opinion. You money so your decision i guess. I prefer to get the best or non at all. If the radar detector saves you from at least two tickets, then it's paid for itself already. I've had the detector for about for about a yr and its saved me over 20times already.

Yes the detector will only detect the cop if he uses his radar, but a speeding ticket will only really hold up in court unless they get a radar lock. Thats why POP isn't accepted in court, only radar locks are. Thats why most cops actually take three readings before giving you speed reading.

Here's a review some of the radar detectors they did last yr.

Right now i have a Cobra. Was like 80 with best buy discount i believe. However a word of advice if you have one (esp a nice 200-300$ one). Do NOT leave them mounted in the window on hot days. Mine has completely stopped working. The heat really messed it up, now the speaker is messed up. Also when its in the sun for a while it will just start going off.

It use to work prettty good though. Saved my *** a couple times. Funny thing is I tend to speed more when I do not have it in the car. When I have it on i usually go around the speed limit.

I have Escort 8500 (model before x50). It stays in the car all the time and yes, it gets VERY hot. I can only touch it for about 2 seconds. But it works fine. If you're driving around and it's mounted on the dash, it'll still get just as hot. (touch it, you'll see) Doesn't matter if you have AC on or not.

Had mine for about 2 years now.

escort, and i would think other companies, make their detectors to withstand temps in the hundreds cause obviosuly you have to mount it in direct sunlight (on the windshield). a detector should NOT break due to heat damage unless its a defect.
