ok i have an auto and yes a set of 16" HFP wheels wrapped in toyo proxes 4s grip and handle much better than my winter gear: 14" steelies with goodyear viva 2s (snow tires).
what is your point?

the tires do have a little to do with not catching 2nd, but if you increase the rim size that is the real reason you cant get the tires to bark because it takes more power to turn a larger radius wheel.
My tires make a funny noise if i pop the clutch in first gear... It makes me happy... and it sounds like a cat... if you grab it by the tail.. Like I would know.............................................. ................
as stated above bigger rims are harder to move for the car so you has less acceleration right now but more displacement physcis 101...
unless you rev higher your car for the 2nd gear and release the clutch pretty damn fast you wont hear your tires squeal...
