Metal shift ***** get hot in the sun?
A friend of mine tells me his metal shift **** in his s2000 gets super hot in the sun, much hotter than the black interior surfaces. Seems like this would be a terrible design idea. Can anyone confirm or deny this: do metal shift ***** get hotter than the black leather/plastic ones? Thanks.

Hey Douchebag, I mean Drk01Civic, you don't have anything constructive to say = keep your mouth shut. Since the **** in the s2000 is silver, I thought it would not get as hot as black colored surfaces. Thanks to the other guys for the info.
i had the dc sports shift **** and yes, it got very hot in summer, and very cold in winter. i now have the spoon titanium shift **** which still gets hot/cold but, it adjusts to the temperature of your hand in about 2-3 seconds...pretty cool.

eh, I suppose. If I wanted to be a smart ***, I'd point out that both the leather and the metal shifter would be exactly the same temperature (i.e. the ambient temperature in the car) and the metal would only _FEEL_ hotter since it conducts heat more effectively. I guess I could also say that in the sun, a reflective metal **** might have a lower core temperature than a black leather ****, since its reflective surface does not allow the sun's energy to directly contribute to its enthalpy, but would then have to concede that it might still _FEEL_ hotter, eventhough it's not. But then I'd have to spend 5 minutes of prime Miller Time writing such a smart *** post, and I'm not a smart ***.

1. Silver reflects, black absorbs. Anything black is hotter than anything sliver. (light color vs. dark)
2. The more it weighs, the more heat it can hold, it stays hot longer.
3. Metal has a higher heat capacity than plastic. It gets hotter.
Really... this is a bit of a captain obvious question and answer.... but then again, I have an engineering degree that says I know everything.

Boilermaker1, that was the point of my original post. Does the reflective (silver) nature of the metal **** compensate for the better heat conductivity when compared to a black leather ****. Intuitively, I'd say the metal would feel hotter, yes. But surely there would be someone in the entire Honda engineering core that might point out: hey, that **** is going to get way to hot. So, eventhough I'd guess the metal would feel very hot indeed, I have to take into account that this product was concieved, tested, manufactured and sold to the public, so maybe I was missing something. Something like: since it's reflective and made of metal, it could feel the same as a black leather ****.

Well the point is that Honda probably doesn't care. Metal looks nicer and more sporty, and it doesn't wear like leather. Most leather ***** 8 or 10 years from now either won't have leather left on them or will be worn through and trashy looking.
The other thing is that ***** aren't "leather", they're leather covered. Most of them still have plastic and metal inside of them, so then you have leather acting like a blanket, holding heat in.
Its a shift ****, not gas milage or crash ratings. Honda doesn't care. Its probably the least engineered part on the car. They pick a shape and make 10 million of them. Metal ***** are cheaper. Cast em, clean em up, screw em on. Thats all they care about.

I had a Momo Shot shifter which was Carbon fiber and metal. The top half was silver carbon fiber which never got hot. Unfortunately, I have an A/T now and its useless.
Sorry if I am hacking your post but is there any company that makes a decent looking A/T shifter for the civic?

Yes, metal ***** are both hotter to the touch during hot Summer months and cold to the touch during Winter months. As was mentioned, the actual temperature of the **** may not be different from that of other interior surfaces, but the transfer of heat or cold to your hand is much faster when you are grabbing a metal ****.

Even my stock automatic shift **** gets damn hot. So does the steering wheel. Sometimes I sit there for like 5 minutes with the A/C on before I go anywhere cuz I can't hold on to the wheel.
And your metal shift **** will get cold in the winter, too.

Worst thread ever.
Use a metal **** when it's 10 degrees outside. That's where the real fun is. I pulled my gloves off and started driving and my hand pretty much froze to the ****. OEM leather wrapped **** is comfortable to use year-round.

^^ No ****. I can't believe that many people are taking this seriously. I just came back from Vegas and did not expect to see this on page one of the forum still. Oh, by the way, nice comeback Betty. After reading a couple more of your posts it doesn't surprise me at all that you would ask a question like that. Ok, now if everyone has finally learned that metal gets hot in the sun can we lock this stupid thread before anyone else wastes more brain cells on it.
