Best oil filter for cold starts?
Hey guys,
This question I'm asking isn't about what's the best oil filter on the market. I'm currently using Mobil 1 oil w/ a Mobil 1 oil filter. Because I don't change the oil but every 5,000 miles, I want to make sure I have a good filter.
But I'm wondering if theres a better filter than Mobil 1 on cold starts? A cold start is where you crank up the car that hasn't been cranked in like 5 or 6 hours or more. I've heard of this purafilter or something like that.....if anyone can correct me on the correct spelling, I'd appreciate it......I think you can buy them from Napa. But the significance of the Purafilter is that it retains oil in its filter everytime you start the car, unlike other filters like Mobil 1 where theres not a sufficient amount of oil being fed to the filter until after the car starts up.
They say the number 1 cause of engine wear/tear is the dry start where you first crank up the car after an oil change....hence dry because all of the old oil was drained out so at the time the new oil is in.....it hasn't circulated due to not starting up the car. And then a second wear factor on engines is the cold start...........
So whats the best filter that will help on a cold start? Sorry for the long post, just trying to clarify any misunderingstanding that might have occured from my question. Thanks!

Given the fact that mobil 1 coats all the moving parts with a film, I wouldn't worry about it. There have been tests that show you can run a car for a million miles with M1 and still pass new OEM engine part tolerances. You can seriously run Mobil 1 for like 50 miles with a dry pan and not cause much damage.

You're looking for a filter with a good anti-drainback valve (ADBV). The Mobil1 has a silicone valve, which is generally thought to be the most effective type. I used to run Mobil1 filters with my Mobil1 oil, but after chopping a few apart I came away more impressed with the Purolator PureONE filter's construction. It's a few bucks cheaper, too.
