i dont have one, but gonna get one for chistmas present to myself, haha, yeah, i heard its pretty accurate, input from ppl that actually have one will be useful, thanks
I have one and I love it. I have had it for 3 years and it is so nice to have. It is the only way to know if what you are doing to your car is worth the money. It is pretty accurate. You are supposed to make 3 runs and average them out. The way I see it is even if it isn't exactly accurate (which I think it is) atleast you can see your improvements.

I had the Pro/Competition one. I sold it last week on Ebay though (need money for turbo stuff) It's really nice. I can't say how accurate it is because I never brought it to a track, my numbers sounded pretty accurate though. The shift lights are accurate. HP and torque always read 92 consistantly (sounds right... it counts for aerodynamics and what not, I only had an intake). It's all based on accelerometers. X, Y, and Z acceleration. If you know the weight of the vehicle and the amount of g's you are pulling over an amount of time you can calculate HP, Torque, and all track times. It's pretty good overall.
EDIT: If you were wondering how the tach works, when you rev you engine, your alternator spins at a proportional rate which sends a small change in voltage to your 12V outlet.
