Painting Carbon Fiber?
I created this topic a long time ago with no real informative replies ... so I'm doing it again T_T;;
anyway ... does anybody know if it is possible to paint over CF? ... I want to get a hood and trunk painted. Do think think it would crack or chip easily? I have a hood that was in perfect condition and now it has a crack over where the header is (probably due to too much heater w/ the turbo)

Yes you can paint it, alot of people on this site have painted the sides of their CF hood. Just search through the members rides and you will see alot of the hoods painted and talk to those people.

Yeah you can definetly paint it.. for it chipping easy and etc.. Yeah of course.. because of the light material.. but i'm sure it could stand more then fiberglass..
you just have to make sure that you sand it down properly are you goingto do it yourself/

^^ sand it down, eh? ... no, I'm not gonna do it myself ... probably have Honda paint it my factory color. I want it for the lightness, but I don't want to have like a black hood and trunk on a Beige car (my hood is already black and I'm not likin it).
If I buy a new one, I have to sand the clear coat off?

yes honda has a body shop, every dealer has a body shop, some people only trust there car to the dealer and they want OEM parts if they ever have a collision, as other body shops usually use aftermarket parts that look like OEM parts, but the quality is shitty. Only bad thing is there extremely expensive.

hmm ... well they're the only ones that I know of who can perfectly match honda colors. I don't want my hood to come out shoreline mist metallic when it's titanium metallic (even though the two colors look very very similar)
problem is that there aren't very many custom bodyshops that I can't think of (plenty of auto repair stuff, but nothing aftermarket) ...
so uh ... you need to sand down the clear coat? ;P

ok, listen to me on this, i got mine painted and my bodyman is awesome and did a fantastic job
He said in the gelcoat, there were tiny pinholes. He had to go and individually fill them in or they would have show through the paint.

Yeah you can get the carbon fiber painted and after that have two choices
1. I think they can sand the paint down again to get rid of the carbon weaving that shows through the paint. Then repaint it again so the body part looks like an OEM panel.
2. Leave it like it is and the carbon shows through the paint like on some of the Special Edition 04 or 05 (forgot which year) Corvette Z06 hoods.

i think u can paint the sides, but i dunno what'll happen if you paint the hole thing...if u have turbo...that'll make a lot of heat which might ruin ur paint thru CF...I dunno man..

^^ well, I used to have a turbo ... and it cracked right where the turbo manifold was ... but I don't have one anymore, so it shouldn't really be a problem ... ;P
you can get carbon kevlar comes in diff. colors or to answer your orig. question yes you can paint cf.
i have cf hood painted for over a year, no problems and i have a turbo.....
you will be fine.

I got in an accident and my stock hood got jacked up. used CF hood was cheaper than a new stock hood, so I got a cf hood ... except that it has hood pins in it.
Nevertheless, a fully painted CF hood is more sleeper-style than a stock hood ... and weighs less. I am going for an OEM sleeper look
