I have the passport 8500, it works pretty much like any other radar detector out their, in my opinion, save your money for something else and just drive the speed limit because the only time the radar will go if is if the cop has his radar on, alot of times cops wont clock people untill they are about to pass them. I wished I saved my money and bought something different.

keep in mind that nothing can protect you from LASER or instant-on radar

Valentine 1 for 2 reasons.

1. Directional arrows. I like to know where the threat is coming from. Often the cops in the metro Detroit area will setup speed trap with cops position one after the other on a highway. You pass one and you might think you are free and clear on other detectors coz' it is still beeping and you think it is from the cop you just pass. On the V1, you'll see the counter showing 2 with the arrows flashing front and back. So you know there's another cop in front of you. It really works.

2. Fully remote display features. If you notice in my picture, the unit mounted inside the storage bin is the remote display. The main unit is above the rear view mirror. You can mount it near the cluster/gauges if you want. But it takes only a millisec. for me to glance to the right to see the display when I hear a beep. I like how all the information from the main unit is displayed on this little remote display.

Just review from other site. On the other hand, I have some cheap radar detector from bestbuy. Costed me $50 and works great. Cant complain.

Some of the newer ones are being advertized as "virtually eliminating all false alarms!" Anyone know if this is close to being true? I've had them in the past, but I ended up ignoring it because of all of the false alarms..

just adding my .02, from what ive heard from others

there are two types of detectors

the more common one, all it does is pick up certain types of waves going through the air. different ones will say like what kind of wave, or how strong the signal is basically how far away, or what direction its coming from, just depends which kind of detector you get. I had one that i got for free sorta, i think it costs like 90 bucks at fry's. yea it worked, it went off everytime i drove by one of those sign things that tell you how fast ur driving as i drove by. but it also went off randomly when driving by buildings, or up in the mountains or whereevr.

the other one is worse to have if ur pulled over, it first detects the waves, and then it trys to block the signal. kinda like the thing in ff2, like if the radar detected the wave signal (rice rocket) it shoots that harpoon thing to shut it down, so if a cop was pointing it at you it wouldn't show how fast u were going, or some will send a signal saying ur going 45 mph no matter how fast ur going i think. but its pretty obvious anyway if the cop hit you with the gun, and they can pull u over even if u weren't speeding and ticket you, and because they caught you using the radar jammer thing you cant fight it.

For you it doesn't matter if you have a radar detector or not. The cop is going to get you for just driving a EVO. The cop will probably pull you over just to check out your ride. LOL

hm..i need a radar detecter for the highways too, good topic. i dont know jack about detectors but ive heard nothing but good stuff from people about the passport 8500. its also one of the more expensive ones(600$cdn) so...if something cheaper could do the trick for me then so be it.

Here
and www.radartest.com

Do some real research. Please don't go on the opinions and misinformation a lot of the people here will give you. Because they "heard" this brand or that brand is good...doesn't mean it is. And a quick note on radar jammers. Obstruction of justice. Big ticket. Illegal..and easy to pinpoint. I wouldn't recomend. As far as laser...yes detectors detect them...but your reaction time is not faster than the speed of light. The beam is so narrow that the chances of catching it from another car are pretty slim.

Good luck.
