you get what you pay for, if you want the best, pay the best, as far as I know only valentine one is by far the best, but its pricey all the other ones probably wont work as good as it also, I have one thats like 150 its a cobra, i know it doesnt work as good. You might also want to look into bell

Valentine One is the best one I used. Another good one is the Escort 8500 and it's cheaper version the 7500. Bel radar detectors are good as well. The bel 890 is I think the baseline model but if you have money the bel 980 has voice waringins. If you only do street driving than a Cobra or a Whistler may do.
I got a middle of the line Cobra two weeks ago. Got a ticket the same day on the freeway in Nevada. It never even peeped when the cop tagged me. I asked him to hit me again to see if it was working. That time it registered...
Well it looks like the Escort 8500, SR7 and the SRX are at the top and suprisingly, the Valentine One did not do as well as suspected... I want to purchase the SR7, but I'm sure the prices are not cheap.
i also recommend the bel vector 985..
i love everything about mine..

I have a Cobra ESD-9560, it's saved my *** several times. Decent ratings on radartest.com. It's got a 2.5 for Ka Band, not the best, but better than a lot for the price. Great rating for laser (4 stars) and false alarms (5 stars). I think I paid about 80 or 90 bucks around a year ago at Best Buy.
If you want the best performer, it has to be the Valentine One. It tells which direction the signal is coming from, how far away it is, and how many signals are out their. Plus, if you get a ticket, they'll pay for it! I've never got a speeding ticket since I bought it.
Despite RadarDetectorTest.com's ratings, the Valentine One is hands down the best performer I've seen first hand. But if money is an issue don't except anything less than an Escort 8500, since anything less you may as well not even have one. The Escorts do work pretty well, but like 25% of the time it takes longer to detect than my Valentine One (I have both a Escort 8500 and V1). When it does detect you don't where it's coming from unlike the V1, still excellent for the money though.

i personally will go with the valentine one, because once it is old you can have it sent out and reprogram as it was brand new for a price range depending on the model you got. i love it, no more guessing games.
I've got the Solo S2 which is pretty nice. Around $329, but I chose it cause SCC Magazine rated it as a really good one. + It's wireless so I don't have the hassel of the cord in my way and it reads all wave bands, easy to take with you on the go, and I have yet to get a speeding ticket. I average about 80 mph on the highway for my commute everyday to work here in CT.

well, money isnt that big of an issue, i just didnt think it was all that necessary, but right now it seems like the bel vector 985 and V1 is the way to go....now which one will it be?
v1 is an independent company and deals with you staight forward. v1 can also be found on ebay but by the time it gets to you including shipping is pretty much buy a new one. the older one that are on ebay are kinda old and need to be updated.
