Why can't they make exhausts like this?

Why can't they make exhausts like this?

Here is why I hate every aftermarket exhaust there is: they all have freaking huge tips. I know, I know, "bigger exhausts free up power." That's fine. I'm sure the aftermarket piping is better than the stock piping, and I'm sure the aftermarket muffler is better than the stock one, but don't tell me that when 2.5" piping flares out to 4" or more just for the tip that that frees up anything. Here's what I mean. Look at the DC TCS:

edit: andale is being stupid so click here and scroll down to see the pic I tried to link to above. In the meantime I'll try to look for it on a different host.

See the tip? wtf is up with that? Is it just "for looks?" Give me a break.

Why can't they make an exhaust that looks like this (see attachment). Don't tell me the market is so bad that only big tipped exhausts will sell

Companies should hire me to design exhausts.

I haven't found the exact pic yet, but here's another view of the huge tip that doesn't help performance at all:

edit: Image won't link and I can't delete this post, so I've attached the pic in my next post.

^ wtf?

Here's the pic I tried to link to. Notice the huge tip that flare out just so people can go "look, I have a huge *** tip on my car. I'm cool!"

Now, here's the same thing, but less tacky looking, less police attracting, and more importantly, less ricey (true if the definition of rice is "looks high performance but doesn't actually improve performance")

Yes, I know it's a crappy photochop job but you get the idea.

If it were made like this, you would still get the exact same performance as the exhaust would normally provide, but it would have the advantages listed in the first paragraph.

Please note I'm not picking on DC or the TCS in particular. I'm just criticizing any muffler that follows this formula:

I agree. But too much bigger than stock looks ricey.

Don't get me wrong, if you actually have enough power to necessitate a 4" exhaust then by all means, use one. But our D17's with 127 or less hp do not need 4" exhausts.

Most people dont put big tips on their mufflers, the muffler just has a big opening, unless you are a freaking idiot who has nike stickers all over there car and pop a walmart tip on their muffler. So many hispanics here in houston do that. They drive 88 accords or civics with a big *** tip, cheap apc spoiler, and those "fear this" stickers all over there car, and try to race people who have turbos and nos on their car. Personally I like the big opening like the apexi and HKS muffler, it looks nice and sounds nice.

Ok I'm calmed down a bit now.

vietstyLez, don't take offence at this, I'm just trying to understand you. I get how you think it looks better. That makes sense. Everyone has a personal preference about everything. But don't you think a 4" tip is misleading? The only reason companies starting making these huge tips is because buyers are trying to copy the performance look of cars that are actually high performance (and therefore warrant the use of large piping, because in that case it's NOT a tip, it's actual big piping). So, if you have a 4" tip on your car wouldn't you feel like you're trying to present your car as something it's not?

I know. I'm not talking about that. I'm just complaining because every aftermarket exhaust out there has a big tip on it. Or if you don't want to call it a tip, you could say "every aftermarket exhaust out there has a big opening after the muffler." I think it's especially dumb when, like in the case of TCS, it is the normal piping size after the muffler but then it flares open to a wide tip. I know it's just cosmetic, but they should offer a model that doesn't flare out like that as well.

I have to agree with you on the big tip thing. Too small doesn't look good either, maybe a 2.5-3" tip would be decent. It's even worse on the WRX, they average about 4.5" vs. 4" on the Civic for the same brand. Which is why I got this one, purdy aint it.

the greddy has a sp exhaust, I think that is what it is and the tip is like a normal tip that alot of cars come with stock, and it is a performance exhaust. I think companies dont make exhaust with little tips because a majority of people out there perfer the big tip exhausts.

Yeah, sorry, it is for a WRX. It's a dual 3" tip, slightly larger than stock. I waited forever for a subtle exhaust like that. On my Civic, I also got the must subtle exhaust, the Apexi WS, but even that has a 4" tip.

Or is it dual 2.5" I have to measure.

Its mostly for the appearance. I mean, come on, no one wants to spend $500 for a pea shooter looking thing. As long as the tip isn't so big that its overwhelming, I'm fine with it. Yes the RS*R has a 4" tip... but then the end is rolled and the actual piping inside it is about 3.5". But the thing is, it fills in the bumper cut out... so it looks like it fits real well, unlike the stock one, which really didn't need the cut out, since it was a) way too small and b) not long enough to even make it to the bumper.
And dont say those thermos bottle things look good. That may as well be a 16" long, 6" wide tip hanging under there.
And what about systems like the greddy? Which just has an overly large pipe coming straight out of the canister? Is that somehow less gay than just a larger tip?

A 4" tip does fit the cutout perfectly. I think the problem is with the thinness of the tip wall. If it was rolled, or thicker, then it wouldn't look as exaggerated.

Good. That wouldn't look too good on a Civic.

I read that one exhaust gave like +19 or 20 hp to a WRX, and that was just the exhaust alone. Wow.

The large pipe coming straight out of the canister is just as dumb, IMO. I don't know which is worse... one with a smaller pipe that they intentionally flare out, or one that's needlessly huge the entire way.

Nah, an exhaust is good for about 10 hp. A downpipe is good for almost 20. I've ran 13s with just those 2 mods alone.

Very nice. I like the way they designed the piping so the tip fits almost flush with the bumper.

I hate the stock tips!!!! They look like they belong on some old guys truck!!!! I really hate these stupid canister(coffee can)style mufflers that come on all of the cat backs!!! It pisses me off!! They need to make a cat back with an oval style muffler and a nice doubled wall tip!! And none of that 6'' of pipe and then a tip!!!!!! That **** looks gross!!!

Wow, is that the TCS in that second pic (the rear view one)? That looks like a normal tip. Where'd you get it and did you just weld it on?
