Thumbs up NGK plugs revived my ride!

As alot of you know, my car has a huge amount of problems. The most annoying thing was the engine rattle and sluggishness. I finally ordered some new plugs to replace the old ones with carbon all over them (only 17K miles old). Not wanting to get platinum for $12 each, I tried NGK iridium IX for half the price. It did seem to help with the engine noise, and acceleration felt better as well. Before it would really struggle and felt like it didn't want to go. Also I noticed a few of the plugs weren't even that tight when I took them out. Maybe that caused problems as well.

I also changed the air filter and my mpg without the new plugs was 24!! yay it's going back up. We'll see if the plugs helped any later.

Sorry about the long post, but maybe some will find this info useful. Needless to say, the civic and I had some fun tonight driving around town.

Very useful .. I'm looking to get some new plugs soon. . After reading your post about them carboning up after 17k, I decided that it was time to replace my plugs before winter since they have 38,000 on them.

Did you buy them online?

If so do you have a link?

Check the plugs first. If they don't have problems, just leave them in. The stock platinums are supposed to be good for a long time, and I only felt a gain because my old ones were messed up. The NGK iridiums are cheap at only $6-7 per plug. Go to sparkplugs.com and do a vehicle search. They have excellent response time and service.

My plugs were mostly black, instead of the brownish color they're supposed to be. I found that they were fairly loose and easy to remove. Maybe this caused the problems.

Iridium has the most features out of all the plug types, but the ground electrode is still nickel. Thus, double platinums (which come stock and cost double what the iridiums do) will last longer.

As long as the plugs aren't fouled, they're still doing the job. Double platinum (stock) should last at least 80K miles, although my car has other probs that caused it.

And if you're gonna change your plugs every 5K, just get the copper plugs for $2 each.

'l4' is a engine configuration. Like a 'v6' or 'l6' is another term for a straight 6. Volkswagon used to make a 'v4' and subaru still makes a 'h4' (horizontally opposed 4 cyl.) It's not an engine code like d16y8 or b16a2, it's just a generic engine name to say 'straight 4.'

I think the only applications for our engine are the iridiums and double platinum. Iridium has more advantages, but double platinum (same as stock) lasts longer.

Laser platinum comes stock, and the V or G power just looks like modified platinum plugs. The iridiums are the latest technology with the smallest center electrode. I would get iridiums (I did), but you probably won't notice any gain unless your old plugs are bad.

Should I go with the NGK Iridiums for my turbo and save money? Or should I spend the $46 on groupbuycenter.com and buy the Denso Ik20s?

I would go with the NGK iridiums since they're basically the same as IK20s. With a turbo, though, you may want to get a colder plug--and for that you have to get denso (not IK20 but a colder version). Check the turbo forum for what people use with a turbo. I've heard the NGKs are good for nitrous, though, so they should be fine with turbo.

Yeah I'm in the forums daily. The thing is, the IK20s are gapped .044 whcih is the correct distance for our engines. The IK22s are gapped even closer so I don't know if it would run as efficiently.

Proper gap is essential, so I would just get the NGK iridiums. Iridium is stronger than platinum so they should be fine with the turbo.

I bought the plugs from those guys. My card declined because I put in the wrong expiration date, they called me the same day. The guy sent the plugs out anyway in good faith and after I called back he verified my account and told me I was all set and that I could expect them in a couple days. I highly recommend these guys if you want to buy the plugs from them. Great people.

- Thought I'd say that to ecourage people to use that site even though it looks pretty plain and unfamiliar.
