Oil for Civic / Filter

We have a 2015 Honda Civic EX (just bought) and I want to change the oil. I believe the manual says to use 0W-20 oil and mentions it might be ok to use synthetic. I was wondering what you folks recommend for the car. I use Castrol Edge in 0W-20 in our Mazda's (it's a synthetic). Is that good for this?

And, for a filter, do you think I should get OEM filters? I have read that Purolator filters are good.

And, lastly, what is a good timing for change of oil? We want to keep this car forever.

Appreciate your help!

Re: Oil for Civic / Filter

Use whatever brand oil you want as long as it's the correct viscosity. Synthetic is great, that's what I use in my '03. I use the K&N filter because it has a bolt on the end for easy removal.

Re: Oil for Civic / Filter

Good advice from Poopies.

I settled on Mobil 1 and Honda oil filters. (I use the 15400-PLM-A01 oil filter, not the -A02 part number.) I changed the oil in our Odyssey when the maintenance minder told me to, which varied from 5,000 - 7,500 miles. I cannot do the 10,000 miles our Civic uses, so initially I did 5,000 miles between oil changes and will lengthen it out to 6 or 7k, depending on how the oil looks when draining it.

Good luck!

On Your 2015 Honda Civic its still under warranty so "I would use what Honda

dealer recommends" and insist on using Synthetic oil to keep up the warranty on it"

but after its out of warranty You can use a slightly thicker Euro spec oil afterward that will give

You better film strength over the long haul of Your engine as far as Oil goes

I'm Not a big Castrol Oil fan. I tend to use 5w30 Pennzoil Pure Plus in mine

as far as oil/filters goes..? Yes K/N as poopies mentioned is great Purolator

another, I use a Fram XG or sometimes if I see a Mobile1 Extended filter I

will use that too. drain intervals well if Your like me I change mine at 5.000 that's Canadian KM"s.

You don't have to use what Oil viscosity honda says on the Oil Cap. You can

safely use a slightly thicker oil for better film strength in Your engine

If You Look in Your owners manual theres a temperature rating for oil

Viscosity's, On My 2008 it says 5w20 on the cap i use 5w30 Synthetic Instead.

thats a far cry when In Europe the Exact same engine as mine is running on 5w40

there is no reason to deviate from the recommended viscosity,

engineers are paid big bucks to determine what is best for the engine, you and i do not know better then them,

use what it says on your oil cap....its simple

whats on the Oil Cap is simply a recommendation from Honda of North America

For fuel economy thats it...did You see the Viscosity chart Range from Honda ..? if You Look You will see

that..

(Honda North America)- posted 5W20-5w30 Viscosity for use
in the Temp chart Yes ..! absolutely Safe to use.

https://www.honda.ca/Content/ownerma...CIV2-234-E.PDF

If You look at The Same 1.8 Petrol engine in Germany
(Honda of Europe)- will recommend a range of 0W20 - 5w40 viscosity Oil
to use. Look at the Temp chart 5W40 is perfectly safe to use. (scroll down to
Page 460)- "to see the viscosity Temp Chart" Hondas Viscosity Range on the 1.8
Liter engine like mine is starting from 0w20 to max 5w40 all Year Round its a no brainer

Re: Oil for Civic / Filter

i run 5w30 in my 91 civic its what honda calls for year round is this why my engine uses oil now? did i wear it down buy using 5w30 or should i have used 5w40 ? my mechanic told me to run a thiner oil like 0w20 or 5w20 in the cold winter temps before, for better startup sorry I'm confused?

Don't be confused Simply put On Your 91 Honda Civic it has a Viscosity range of
for exam: 0w30-5w40 NOW ... choosing the right Oil Viscosity can be for some a
challenge or a fine balance from using a thin Oil to a thicker Oil its all about
Aplication and Temperature for exam: how is the vehicle being driven? is it
raced on a track where engine temps are reaching over 220 -230-250-260 You
get it ... ? if Not, and the outside ambient temp is warm Year round then 5w30
- 5w40 would be a Excellent fine Choice But... on the other side of the coin. say

You Lived in a cold climate like North of Quebec or Alaska where in the Winter
months You see Extreme Temps of -40 then You would want to use a 0W20 or 30
Oil thats why? Honda sets a range of Viscosity's & Temperatures around the World
To use... i Linked Below a great Video for You to watch Enjoy...!

mmitsch i read online that 2015 civic ex has tight tolerances in engine and needs 0w20 oil it could be better for your engine

"Tolerances" does not mean the size of clearances. it means the amount of Variation.
Clearances in the new Honda Engines are no tighter than Clearances
In any of the Japanese automakers Engines have been for the Last 10 Years
again the reason 0w20 IS SPECIFIED is in order for Honda to Conform to the
Cafe Standards Regulations Regarding Fuel Efficiency Claims by the automaker.

"In Extremely Cold starting Conditions" Honda can Legally claim an additional 1
Mile Per Gallon if 0w20 is used in the engine. If You Look at the Honda North American & European
Oil & Temperature chart Range i Posted You will see theres no reason Not to use a thicker Oil Specified
By Honda. its in there Owners Manual.

(especially for Example) If the car is being raced On a Track using 0w20 will drop Oil Pressure from the
heat & thin out and wear bearings "No Blackstone Oil analysis" will Tell You that. Heres an Example
i found online below of different viscosity Oils see how the Oil pressure drops with heat on a race track
