Honda Civic 2008 sudden high RPM

I have a Honda Civic 2008 automatic transmission. Yesterday I was driving over the road and i heard a sudden increase in the RPM. I stopped changed the shfts to P and then D again, and since then when i press the gas the RPM jumps to 2 and then goes down slowly, it can icrease to 3 when i press more. The car shifts fine with reference to the speed, however, the RPM is relatively high compared to the speed. Its worth mentioning that i've put gas in the car and consumed almost half the tank. Could this be related to water in the gas??

Whats going on Guys??

Check trans fluid
Check for fault codes

Test drive, compare to identical car
Have a professional inspect it?
