Amp clamp

Hey was wondering if a high quality 20A mini amp clamp is enough to do all kinds of tests? And what kind of tests I could do with a 20A clamp.

Thx.

Re: Amp clamp

It's enough to test 20A circuits but there are circuits that are higher then that. Depends what you want to test.

Re: Amp clamp

I was thinking of getting one for parasitic draw and wondering what more I could use for it.

Re: Amp clamp

Ah okay. For something like that you can use a regular multimeter or a shunt. Just set your meter to read amps and put the leads in line with the circuit.

Amp clamps are handy since you don't need to unhook anything to read current.

Re: Amp clamp

Amp clamp won't be sensitive enough for parasitic draw

Re: Amp clamp

^ Good point.

They make ones that are but most amp clamps are for larger current circuits. I have used amp clamps to measure mA but they were expensive meters. For super precise stuff I always used a shunt.

Re: Amp clamp

That may actually be sensitive enough to work. It just might be hard to get the wire you want to test far enough away from the other wires in the harness so you don't get any interference
