Rep Power: 0 "edible Green" Civic Wiring harness ?
Was wondering what year Honda started using soy based " green" materials in their wiring harnesses , hoses and other engine components
I've had major damage ($$$$) done by squirrels since I bought my used 2012 Civic last summer. I'm going to look around for an older car w/ the old style non edible wiring harness - not sure what - but I got to get a non edible car
Anybody else have this problem ?
Jon in Ohio

If you think a good mechanic is expensive, try hiring a bad one

Google it.
I've read that popular manufacturers have been using it for more than a decade, I believe some have been using it since the mid '90s. (Benz in 1991? with disastrous results.)
AFAIK soy is in the wiring insulation, not belts or hoses. Also may be in fabric insulation and seat cushions.
Belts and hoses are EPDM rubber in newer cars.
Rodents will gnaw on everything around them though.
A salesman opened the hood of a car the other day, showing it to a customer, and found a live rabbit happily munching on injector wiring.

That's weird. Is it the smell that attracts the vermin? I remember one of my neighbors cats shredding the spark plug wires on my parent's 1997 Ford Escort station wagon.

Yeah, but cats are just a bunch of I'll mannered weirdos...not to be trusted. My cat chases thin air around the house for 10 minutes every day.
Apparently there's some sort of tape you can wrap the wiring in to deter the rodents. That sounds like a fun Saturday afternoon job, eh?

The big burly tough guy rodents will be out there snorting lines of the stuff just to prove how tough they are.
Look real close at the chewed knock sensor wire here....it was wrapped in the anti mouse tape when it got eaten
I thought the "X" through the eyes was supposed to mean it's some good killer ****. Huh.

Maybe that stuff is just for mice? Is there a squirrel and/or rabbit variety as well? Maybe Honda should give you a free cat with every new car purchase?

Latest info from Car & Driver references the problems and some solutions, but also gives the website for a guy who specializes in these problems. There's a wealth of info here.
