Trouble removing calipers.

I feel stupid even asking this as I have done plenty of brake jobs on my older cars. Should I be pulling up to loosen the top and bottom bolts, or pushing down? I bought rotors I wanted to slap on as the ones that are on now are worn down and I am getting some pulsating. Im not worried about the screws...i loosened one but I couldnt get the other one loose....if anything, drill time. Also, no matter what way I tried I could not loosen those bolts for the life of me...Its a pretty bad area to even get any kind of good leverage in. What do you guys use? Breaker bar?Smartass comments about air tools will be ignored, thank you :-P

Re: Trouble removing calipers.

You should be pushing down I believe. If you haven't already turn the wheel so the caliper sticks out from the wheel well. It will give you more room to use a breaker bar or a pipe on the handle.

Re: Trouble removing calipers.

if your getting pulsating its probably the rotors, they are warped...happened to me and i just changed the rotors and it went away

Frankie I got that covered with the wheel turning, thats how I did them on all of my cars....i am just worried about the brake long so close on that upper bolt. I'll have to try hitting it with some penetrant

Alpha, I know man i know...i still use that lol. Its just, I get all contemplative with it....like I start thinking of the perspective of the person installing it, and how it would be threaded, and i get all confused. My brain is fried bro.

OK this is what I mean by perspective and how I over think stuff...so I will put this my way....drivers side down, passenger up?

Thanks everyone for your help so far

LOL, beat me to it.

Turning the bolt clockwise tightens it and counter-clockwise loosens it. So yes, driver down, passenger up.

If you're driving and your girlfriend is in the car, its driver up, passenger down - but this is different than a brake job.

Re: Trouble removing calipers.

Back to the brakes.

You said you've done swaps before, so I'm afraid to ask this, but did you compress the piston? Or is that not the part you're having trouble with. If nothing else, you may want to take it to somewhere with air tools. Adam could probably help you out. I know you said no smartass comments about air tools, but that may be the only way.

Re: Trouble removing calipers.

Yeah my friend works at meinekie in Rocky Point so I COULD if I had to...had to do that with my shocks on the 90 lincoln...he had those rusted bolts of in 5 seconds. Compressing the piston isnt the problem, its getting the caliper OFF. If I have problems compressing the piston that will be a first for me....then again...so is this.
