Thinking of buying 2004 Civic EX

Hi, new to the forum, and new to Honda's. I'm thinking of buying this 2004 EX for my son. 170k miles, $3800 asking price. Passed MD inspection. Everything works, new tires.

Carfax showed two owners, one who owned it and the guy who's selling it who is a mechanic who buys civics and sells them. 2 hits - one cosmetic and one in 2011 that required the hood and radiator to be replaced and set off airbags. I don't personally know the guy selling it but have 2 mutual friends with him that vouch that he's a stand-up guy.

I think the price is a little high, and am thinking of offering $3300. Thoughts?

Welcome to the forum!

The car looks good and the millage is not bad but the price is still too high. The car is now 15 years old and can start showing its age in many components.
Price should be closer to 3000 or less.
I you do decide on getting it, read up on the headgasket problem these are known for. If it hasn't been changed on this car it might need it in the near future just fyi.

It's had the valve cover and/or head off, I'm thinking head due to the exhaust manifold bolts looking newer than the rest of the engine, but don't' know for sure, but I don't know if they did the timing belt when they did that or not. I'm going to offer 3000 and see.

Could have had headgasket issues which if fixed properly will be good to go for a while. Find out about the timing belt though. If that breaks it is very expensive to repair.

Did some digging and found out the head gasket, water pump, timing belt, tensioner, etc, were replaced in 2012 at 88k miles...

Re: Thinking of buying 2004 Civic EX

timing belt and water pump are due again (every 7 years)
test drives good? all the warning lights come one when you first turn the key before starting?
car looks clean, see if you can have a peek underneath.
if you're handy you can diy the timing belt and waterpump they're not too hard.
start at $2500 maybe? mention that the timing belt + water pump are due again (the intervals are listed in the owners manual)

Drives good, all warning lights come on and go off like they are supposed to. I'm fairly handy (have done lots of suspension & engine work on my wrangler, but nothing as involved as a timing belt).

I offered $3000 before I had heard back from the shop that did the work back in 2012, and he came back at $3500. I'm going to let him know it's due again and that's why I'm at $3k and see what happens.
