DIY Painted Grille

So, I'm planning on painting my grille today or tomorrow with paint I bought off paintscratch.com. Anyway my question for those of you who painted your grille; did you just paint over the unpainted portion or did you sand it down, primer it, base, and clear coat it. I could swear there was a DIY on this but I couldn't find it.

Re: DIY Painted Grille

yeah you need to prep it and actually do more than just put the paint on. for how cheap it is at a body shop for a professional paint job ($30), im surprised you just didnt have someone else do it.

The bodyshops in my area are talking 100+. But I did end up just painting it and it looks like crap. I'll just give it another shot.

Re: DIY Painted Grille

just to paint the grill? wow. thats like what a front lip would cost here. well good luck, ive always had terrible luck painting stuff. always comes out the wrong shade of silver, and without a real clear coat, it wont have the look of stock paint.

Re: DIY Painted Grille

If u can find a shop thatll paint a front lip for 30 bucks Ill send my work your way lol. The odds of a color match are rare unless u go to a paint store an dhave the color chipped or scanned. Once u do that, its very easy to do. I woudl typicalyl charge 40-50 to do a grill shell. You shouldnt need more than 4-5 ounces of apint, which would run you about 10-15 bucks max for color. Any body shop should match your color and sell u material to DIY if you have no paint centers near you.

Re: DIY Painted Grille

the trick is, make friends at the body shop, then ask if you can drop off the grill and have them paint it whenever they have to mix up a batch of paint for another car. it may take a bit longer, but they usually wont charge you for the paint if they dont have to mix it just for you.
