Dirty engine compartment

Has anyone ever worried about those huge openings in the front wheel wells that allow road water and mud to splash in the engine area ?
These openings which, in my own opinion, are much too large, are supposed to allow the substantially raised (in the 7th generation Civics) "direction bars" to move freely.
Because of this, I never had such a dirty engine compartment. There is always sand, small rocks, mud and/or water all over the place, especially in the rear of the engine area.
I even once had problems with my throttle cables : they litterally froze overnight when dirty water and mud got splashed onto them.
I had to use a hair dryer on all the throttle mechanism to get started the next morning !!!

Poor design, if you ask me ...

Ya, I have to agree... I was pretty surprised when I was shopping for my Civic, and I took a look into those front wheel wells. I don't know of any other car which has a design like this. But this for this model, Honda really wanted to increase the interior room, without increasing the overall length of the car (our cars are actually slight shorter than the 6th gen). So they really scrunched up the engine compartment (notice how tightly packed our engine bay is). I guess there was no way they could seal off the wheel-wells with this kind of design.

So far I have not had any problems at all with the open-wheel well design, except for a dirty engine bay.

But you should realize that all cars will eventually get dirty engine compartments..... if not from the open wheel-wells, then from the open bottom of the engine compartment, which every car has. Ours will just get dirty a bit faster.

I was actually going to post a topic about that today. Its been snowing like crazy in the midwest and today I was checking a different position for my air intake and was floored at how dirty it was in there. In a matter of driving in the snow for 2 days its just nasty in there.
