95 DX problems

Ok so I bought a 95 civic dx hatch and the original motor was a d16y7 it has the Y7 block but the guy I got it from putt a z6 head on it and that's the way I bought it, I've had the car for about three months and now I have a rod knock so im looking for a new motor so I was wondering can I just go pull a d16z6 out of the same year ex can I just drop it in my car and if not what can I do without changing the traney and ecu? Anything will help at this point. Thanks

Re: 95 DX problems

The original engine your car was a d15b7, the guy you bought if off swapped in the d16y7 block with the z6 head. I don't know much about mini me swaps, but im assuming he had to get the p28 ecu and he wired the car for vtec, if thats the case, then you can drop in a d16z6 without having to worry about getting a new ecu/tranny/wiring etc. To be sure, check your ecu model and check your wiring harness to make sure it is vtec ready. Also I'm pretty sure d15 and d16 tranny's are interchangeable but you may want to do some research to double check

Yeah, they're interchangeable.

Z6's came in all Civic EX, SI '92-'95 and all DelSol SI

Re: 95 DX problems

Did it drive, idle, and rev correctly before the rod knock? Did VTEC engage? D15s never had VTEC. If it did run right, then just go with what you have.

Re: 95 DX problems

Well I have a buddy that has a 92 ex which is vtec and I smoked him so I would assume my vtec engaged and I've never had problems with starting or idle

Re: 95 DX problems

^^Well, you have a hatch (which weights less than the coupe) with an engine just as fast 'cause of the swap.

Should be able to get any D16 bottom end and switch your heads to it.

Re: 95 DX problems

If you have the s20 tranny (original to the DX), it should bolt up just fine. You may want to pull your ecu and look and see if it's been modded for vtec. If not, I would suggest putting in a vtec ecu.
