Wait a minute. You're saying the tranny from a D16 fits the D17?

Re: d17a2 d16 transmission

The more pics you can show of this the better.

What exact transmission are you using? Will you be using the the D16 or the D17 axles? So you will use the existing linkage rod setup on the D16 then? Have you actually road tested the car to make sure there are no issues with the D17 engine and D16 trans?

This is really promising news. Because if it really works, that means we (D17 owners) have more tranny and gearing options and can also get a cheaper LSD than the Quaife. We would just have to convert to a D16-style shifter assembly.

Update when you can!

Re: d17a2 d16 transmission

d17 on the 01-05 em2 civic are cable tranny there no hole in center console floor.
so the linkage rod won't work. To use it you would need to make a hole on the floor.

Re: d17a2 d16 transmission

Yeah, I've been up, down and sideways on the intake mani and decided to just bite the bullet and get a custom one done instead of modding the Y8. Which is why I'm selling my Y8 intake mani and bits right now.

I'm not too worried about having to cut holes in the floor of my to make the linkage rods fit. That's easy stuff if the tranny bolts up and works.

What axles are you using?

Re: d17a2 d16 transmission

Huh, look at that. It does link up. So I imagine you're using D16 axles in it. I wonder if the D17 axles would work in it? Could you take a photo of the linkage assembly on the top of the trans and how it comes out so we can guesstimate subframe clearance?

I wonder if it's possible to retro our cable shift assembly on to it if there are subframe issues.....

Re: d17a2 d16 transmission

Look guys, I managed to bolt up the D16Y8 trans to the D17A2!!

... And thats as far as anyone taking this seriously gets. Cost and labor from here teeters into maniacal levels.

Motor Mount Update: the Motor Mounts and the Transmission Mount are fine. The trans mount is missing 1 bolt on the top of the transmission, but otherwise will work. D17A2 Motor Mounts work perfectly fine.

Shift Linkage Issue: Much bigger problem than just cutting a hole in the floor. We have a subframe and exhaust pipe interfering with the path to the middle of the chassis. Not sure how to approach that, without doing a full exhaust conversion at least, just to make room. That way you wont have to cut too much. But going from a cable shifting system to a shaft linkage is gonna take a LOT of work. It looks like there is a boltup spot for the rear shift bushing already on the underchassis, but unsure if it lines up right.

Flywheel/Starter/Clutch Issue. After researching in a couple spots, you will have to use the D16Y8 flywheel and Starter, the D17A2 setup doesnt line up right at all. Research needed before you use the D17A2 clutch assembly, but supposedly it works, there is not a clearance issue, but it does get a little tight. Using the hydraulic clutch, the D17A2 setup doesn't line up at all. You will have to retrofit the D16Y8 clutch actuating assembly (or whatever its called) to work. Did not get that far. Also dont know how the transaxles will work out either.

Lot of nay-saying, but other than that, I dont know what else to tell you all. I got into this build for the gear ratios and seemingly cheaper cost, I'm getting out of it due to the headache and the added cost. Doing all the labor myself - can't imagine what someone would charge for this kind of work.

UPDATE: This build attempt was performed on a 2001 Civic.

I know this question is 11yrs late lol but does anyone know if the d16 trans internals fit the d17 trans?

I'm saying no. The countershaft and mainshaft assemblies between the D17 and D16 are different lengths, and diameters and positions. MAYBE you can mess with the gear ratios, but I wouldn't know without trying it. You could try using the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gears from the original trans, and swap the 4th and 5th gearsets on the Mainshaft and Countershaft. Since they interconnect 1st-3rd on the Mainshaft, you will HAVE to keep those gears anyway. 4th and 5th swap along with the accompanying syncros, maybe, but you'd have to try it.

I want to say it won't work, or it's not worth the trouble. If you can mod it to work, and prove up a performance increase on a dyno, I'm sure we'd all love to know. But you're experimenting, either way.
