I'm replacing the valve cover gasket on my 93 civic dx; Do I need to use rtv sealant on the four corners as the Haynes manual suggests or is the replacement gasket enough? If so, what type of permatex should I buy? What color, fast setting, slow setting etc?

Did the gasket kit come with any?
Do you have some laying around? Does a neighbor/friend have any? If someone has some that would save you from buying a tube and wasting 98% of it LOL

For the whole job you really only need about as much as you would use toothpaste on your toothbrush.

My pref is ultra gray but just about any brand/type that says ok to use with engine oil should be good enough.

You could just run RTV if you already have a tube of it.

-clean the surface well with alcohol
-place a thin (1mm) layer of rtv black oil compound (I do this by finger or it will squeeze out everywhere later).
-place the valve cover back on
-screw the bolts back in at very low torque, like just at the first signs of slight snugness.
-wait 12 to 24 hours
-torque to spec.


...the only down side is that sucker will be on there if you want to pull it off again; not too hard to remove though but it does take some force.

I like to use Permatex #2
Its like thick tooth paste but doesnt dry into a rubber
