When To Give Up on Repairs
When To Give Up on Repairs
I have a 1995 Civic LX 5-speed manual, 223K miles, original owner. It has been maintained pretty consistently. Now it's looking at a number of repairs. Leaving aside peeling paint, rust on the outside, and the fear that one day the windows won't roll up or down, these repairs seem likely to include the timing belt and water pump, steering replacement (leaking power steering fluid), CV boot and axle, and rear wheel bearing. It's an intimidating list.
On the other hand, a replacement used car of significantly lower mileage is going to cost a chunk, and I can't be entirely sure of what problems its owner may have detected. The insurance and licensing fees would also cost more. With mine, at least I do know what's been done, and I tend to be aware of what's coming up. Brakes are good. The engine seems solid, no problems reported there by mechanics except as mentioned above, and the tranny seems the same as always.
I don't use the car all that much. The needed repairs seem to be coming due on a staggered schedule. I've considered taking care of them one at a time, as they become critical, and seeing if I can stretch the car's life that way.
Suggestions/advice?

That car will run forever if you want it to.
I'm guessing you're not really into repairing things your self.
Id' say find you self a Honda friend to fix most of the issues over a weekend and a case of beer. Then have a shop do the timing belt.

Personally if it were me...
i would rather trade it in for something newer remember
its 22 Years old...! and even if You fix all, at the end of the day
its still an old car its Your choice.
