1988 Civic lossing mpg

my civic for years would get 400 plus mp tank, now im getting 300 mp tank. ive done it all tune up wise and still nothing. would a o2 censor be the cause? i get a check engine light after driving long distance, but it goes away after i turn the car off...is there even a way to check that light? any advise would be nice. tia

Count the blinkin light in the ECU.
A Service Manual should explain it well.
