2 3 or 5 door?
What sender? My first guess was the fuel level sender.
Doesn't matter, not much is available from Honda for something that old. The tank unit is not available from Honda.
You may need to learn how to cobble, repair the one you have or adapt something that IS available to work with what you have.
Many parts were also used on other equipment, like motorcycles. Creative adaptation.
Junkyards, but anything you find will be just as old as what you have already.

Re: 1978 civic
it is a 3 door hatch & it is the fuel sending unit. unfortunately the fuel sending unit is toast. I pulled it out of the tank and the metal outer casing was so badly rusted I touched it and it fell right off. Thank you for your advice. I'll keep looking.
