95 Civic CV boot torn. What should I do?
Hey guys about a week ago when I was changing my brothers timing belt on his 95 civic I discovered that his CV boot was ripped on the driver side. His car is an automatic 1.5. Im trying to figure out whether I should replace just the boot, or should I replace the whole axle? If you guys could help me out that would be great. Also if there is a DIY somewhere I could follow, that would be great!
Re: 95 Civic CV boot torn. What should I do?
its easier to replace the whole axle with a refurb from Autozone but it cost more. Whatever you do, don't use split boots. Replacing just the boots with OEM is quite easy as well so do whatever you can afford.
Re: 95 Civic CV boot torn. What should I do?
Ok, well heres what you do.
Remove all the obvious stuff, tire, brake caliper, rotor, axle nut (big boy usually 32mm) then remove the hub with a FWD hub puller (rent from Autozone $45) Now the hub is seperated from the knuckle, I dont anything about 95 suspension but you can typically push the knuckle aside without having to remove any control arm bolts or the bolts attaching it to the strut (youl have to look at your setup) The axle now just pulls out of the transmission with a hard jerk or pry bar, there may be a snap ring on a 95' I dont know, but you'll see it either way. Once you pull it out you'll loose a few oz of tranny fluid but now all you need to do is put the new one in. Make sure you push the axle all the way in till the housing stops it from going any further. A lot of dummies on this site complain that the axle fell out, well thats because they didnt seat it all the way. Also there is a rubber seal where the axle enters the tranny, its wise to replace this as well. Mine was $2. And thats pretty much it sorry about the bad grammar.

Search for ericthecarguy on YouTube. He's got some great videos of the job. I just did mine for the first time. No special tools except a big socket for the axle bolt under the dust cap.
Good luck!
Good luck!

If you are the least bit car savvy, I would recommend picking up the Haynes manual for your car. It's really helpful for the majority of jobs you'll ever have to do to your car (except for mods).
But yeah, Prodresurgence basically covered it all. Combining text information and DIY videos will help you the most when doing any job.

Changing the axle is a pretty easy job. Prodresurgence pretty much cleared it up for you. Just make sure you have a breaker bar because the axle nut is torqued down to like 134 ft lbs or something like that and is alittle tough.
