Question 1991 ef hatchback DX transmission

As the title says, I have a '91 HB DX, and it's currently a 4speed auto.
I want to convert it to a manual, but a few questions about it first.

Can I convert it to a 5speed or does it have to stay a 4speed?

What parts do I need for the swap?

Any other advice you guys have for me about the certain topic?

I've never done a transmission swap obviously and I've found threads about them, but for later models like '01 and up. It still has the D15 in it, "no I can't put a b16 or b18 in it I have limited funds."

Thanks much in advanced,

Majikmaster

Re: 1991 ef hatchback DX transmission

Your best bet for this swap would be to find a cheap donor car that you can strip everything off of which you will need. Besides the tranny, clutch assembly bellhousing, CV shafts(?), tranny mounts, etc, you will need the clutch pedal assembly, slave cylinder & hardware, and any wiring harnesses & switches associated with the 5 speed system. Like I said, a much easier swap if you can find one car to strip, rather than trying to piece it out one part at a time. Good luck with your search!

As it so happens, I also have a 1991 HB DX. It has a 5speed manual trans. I want to convert it to automatic. (because my wife needs to drive the car too and she refuses to learn to drive a manual) Maybe we could swap parts for parts. Let me know if your interested, or maybe you already have what you need. Bluedog.

Re: 1991 ef hatchback DX transmission

All right, sorry bluedog, lol I'm already done with the swap, it was very successful in everyway. The ONLY problem I am having though, is I can't get past half throttle without it bogging like crazy... I have no idea what it could be. I tried adjusting the throttle cable, it idles fine for a minute then it dies on its own. If anyone has any ideas please help lol.

Thanks again,

Majikmaster
