Starting problems, and idle problems
Starting problems, and idle problems
My honda civic is a 1991 DX with a 1.5 liter Throttle body engine. It seems to hate the hot weather. It idles really high and then starts to pulsate when the idle finally gets kicked down. The car also doesn't start in really hot weather or when the car is on a hill. I think I narrowed my starting problem to a main relay, I have a timing gun and it showed spark and I don't hear the relay clicking and its as all the symptoms provide. This only does it intermittent.
Now onto the idling. I have no idea how to fix it. The idle stick really high and this car being a DX I have no tach and Im not buying one since this isn't my car. But the big problem is that on a hot day when it idles the idle is really high. I would say around 2k-3k. My guess. Could be higher or lower. Then my car eventually gets kicked down and it starts to pulsate. And it does it fast. It idles normal and then acts like its gonna stall then it does it again and again. But it doesn't chug or do anything. Its quick so no timing issue. The car is also the stock engine no mods or anything. Only 260,000 miles of stock.
And then the car won't start if its on a steep hill. Not sure what the circumstances are if its that main relay or if the gas isn't getting sucked in because the last few times it did it it was low on fuel. So thanks for reading this.
I would appreciate any help on these two topics. I am planning on getting this car when I drive...Its also a standard just incase.
thanks again for reading this topic. We kind of let this car go hahaa..

Re: Starting problems, and idle problems
Hi all, I have a 92 LX with around 145000 miles. I just replace the battery.
Cold start has no problem at all.
But after car is warm up, and especially in hot weather,
It is very hard to start after I shut the engine down and try to start within several minutes.
I also notice I can not turn and hold the key, I can only quickly turn the key and let it bound back, then I may start it after waiting another 1-2 minutes
The engine do not stop while driving or waiting traffic light though.
Anyone know what could be the problem or any suggestions?

bk7794 - First things first, check your ecu under the passengers side carpet for any codes. It sounds like you have a problem somewhere in the fuel system ie injectors, pump, filter etc. that would explain the problem of starting when it's hot out and on hills. As for idle, there's an idle screw located at the back of the engine block, wait til the car warms up and try tweaking that and see if it helps. The idle problem also sounds a bit like a faulty TPS.
Civichao92 - Check your main relay and check your ecu for codes. Also in the future don't steal someone else's thread.
